For One Day Only, I am Martin: OK, very little interesting to say about the Pretender Vehicles. They weren't in the cartoons, or the Marvel comics, and they didn't get Transformers Universe entries. The TV commercials are worth a repeat viewing. Both have strength 7 and speed 7. Gunrunner has intelligence 9, Roadgrabber 7. Roadgrabber has endurance 8, Gunrunner 6. Gunrunner has rank 7. He's a Squadron Leader! But who are in his squadron? He's the second-highest-ranking Autobot Pretender this year, after Admiral Splashdown the giant-Seacon-slayer. Roadgrabber has rank 6. Gunrunner has courage 9, Roadgrabber 8. Gunrunner has firepower 8, Roadgrabber 7. Roadgrabber has skill 8, Gunrunner 7. Martin

Actually I think they looked better as silhouettes. Those are not... the most inspiring designs. But I'll pick the purple one, because it pops more.

I picked up both of these at TFN, they are both bare shite. But, Gunrunner just pips it.

Right....
WHAT'S THE F***ING POINT OF A PRETENDER SHELL THAT TURNS INTO A VEHICLE WHEN A TRANSFORMER CAN TURN INTO A VEHICLE JUST FINE ALREADY??????????????????????????????????????????????
I could *ALMOST* understand it if the shell turned into a hyper authentic car with a Cybertronian jet or even better a robotic beat inside but this?
In recent weeks I've seen how much the Pretenders rely on their weapons to finish their vehicle modes but theses? Roadgrabber's worse than most but Gunrunner is dreadful. The figure folds up and attaches to a huge chunk of armour/weaponry that is the inner robot's vehicle mode all by itself.
About the only thing going for these is that Gunrunner's inner root can drive the shell in vehicle mode (Can Roadgrabber?) and Roadgrabber can stand on the Battlestation mode of his vehicle.
And that they're a step towards the far better Mega Pretenders the next year.
Roadgrabber wins.

I just don't think that Phil understands fun.
Recall the tv advert slogan: "THE ULTIMATE TRANSFORMERS EXPERIENCE."

They are definitely the Action Master Elites of the Pretender world. That said, Roadgrabber is still a toy I'm fond of. His usage of the guns as wings in vehicle mode is no worse than Bomb Burst and I was pleased to see something mechanical as a shell rather than another silly He-Man type monster or animal. I will get a photo of Roadgrabbers robot mode as the catalogue seems to just show Gunrunner twice -which has to be the worse use of a silhouette tease ever as they never even revealed the actual toy!

Really difficult, both are fantastic toys, literally perfect.
I'll have to go with Roadgrabber as his toy has more functionality but Gunrunner's does cool things with the cockpit which is easy to miss

To this day I still want a Roadgrabber and am sad I have never had one. -Ralph I have a confession. Way back when... Before I joined The Hub... Back when good ol'blocky Armada drew me back in... I.... I found an obscure trading website thing, can't remember where or what, and I bought a near complete Roadgrabber. I think he was just missing those purple fin bits. I'd never heard of him before, I'd never owned a Pretender before. It was an innocent impulse buy. ROADGRABBERI found the figure disappointing. Yet, all these years later, I have developed a kind of nostalgic prang over Roadgrabber. He was the first G1 I bought after my renaissance. And then he briefly appeared in... ohhhh, errr, Stormbringer was it..?

At the Hitchens/Ras panel at TFN, they showed the original designs for these 2. They had much more involved alt modes which were simplified to save money. I don't believe the designs are anywhere on the internet and I don't remember exactly what they were supposed to be, which is very helpful for anyone who didn't see the panel.

The toy parts of that panel were pretty intense, I can hardly remember any of it except for that mental Throttlebot that looked nothing remotely like the others. It's a blur of what was fascinating info.

I knew I should have spent more of the weekend sober. (I really shouldn't...)
But aye, I'm afraid I'm going to have to join Phil in Club "These Are Pure Shite". Although re-categorising them as Action Masters suddenly makes everything make more sense...

I still maintain Pretenders generally are silly, but I think I like these two because they're basically Transformers in vehicles, and as toy vehicles they look okay.

I seriously begin to doubt the aesthetic tastes of those of you who voted for that Manta Force looking piece of nonsense Roadgrabber
|

Post by Llama God on Sept 8, 2019 8:43:57 GMT
I mean yeah, it is nonsense. But in the catalog picture (which is what this poll is about - remain pure!) it stands out more, for me. Which makes it the better one. Even if it is nonsense.

The real Roadgrabber is so cool he was doing better things, like Movie premiers and celebrity parties, so just couldn't attend the photo shoot that day. He sent his vehicle shell along as he was using the Rolls instead.
