I've never liked Carol Danvers. But, I've liked the MCU versions of other marvel characters that I've felt were similarly boring. So here's hoping!
Even if not, at least it sets up Kamala.

I kind of like that we are at the point where we don't have to spend half a film at least on origin story now. Especially as, with the best will in the world, Carol's origin story isn't actually that interesting. I actually think it does the character some favours if we can just cut to the chase and start out with her doing awesome superhero stuff instead of sitting around while the motions of "Oh god, what has happened to me. what should I do with these amazing powers. Perhaps I should use them for good? Maybe?" are gone through.

I'd recommend reading one of the recent Captain Marvel solo-series to get a better perspective on Carol as a character these days. She really started to become interesting about the time she fell into Claremont's hands in the eighties, but the character has really blossomed in her recent solo books. Karl

There's far too much to read and buy at the moment unless something's truly spectacular!

Indeed. The only marvel books that really get my interest for the past few years are the ones that skirt around the bug guns. The ones that are largely outside the trainwreck shenanigans Marvel likes to forces onto major books like Spiderman, Avengers, and Captain Marvel.
Ms. Marvel, The Unstoppable Wasp, Iron Heart, Champions, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur... I admit, I've only read Wasp, Ms Marvel, and Moon Girl, but I'm drawn to lighter reads like these. And they're usually more self contained (I think maybe that might be a major part of their allure, actually)

In terms of her solo series, a perfectly decently written character who was a decent traditional superhero protagonist. I actually didn't spend any money on reading Carol's solo books - I was borrowing trades from my local library prior to moving down here. The Falkirk library service was richly served with trades. I haven't read much of anything Marvel or DC-wise since moving down here, as the Northampton library service is not so well served in this regard. (On the other hand they have a digital comics app service that has a huge array of non-Marvel and DC stuff on it - I ended up reading a vast swathe of other comics that way). Karl

Middle-of-the-range for the MCU. Fun and funny but neither ground-breaking nor terribly original. A pleasant couple of hours. The actors are good and the humour is good. Love the Flerken (spoilers in link). Martin

Agreed. It firmly fits in the Antman catagory. A fun origin story, but as a stand alone film pretty straight forward. One I will rewatch a lot though. As part of the MCU its more vital than Ant-man as it fits into the Captain America - Shield - Avengers spine.
Of course the star, directors and writers do mark it out to. As a femenist film (probably poor phrasing) it works, but probably not to the degree that Black Panther did for black films last year. Or maybe it does in that one element, but overall it just is not as well put together as Black Panther.

I liked Larson in it a lot, but early on she reminded me of Summer Glau and now I want to see that movie. Not really a spoiler, just commenting on a thought I had about who would or wouldnt appear in the film so might be best avoided... Spoiler I was hoping we'd see Agent Carter as its only about 6 years after her appearance in Ant Man theres no reason to think she'd have retired just yet.
Sort of frustratingly there are 2 characters she could have been swapped in for or could even have been put in a credit scene.
I have an image in my head of Carter in a car with Fury saying "nicholas I have 8 days till retirement" which after one conversation about Furys name in the film I now want to see even more.

Is it something that is essential watching pre Endgame? I'm assuming Captain Marvel is in that, so do we need to see this first?
