Is it something that is essential watching pre Endgame? I'm assuming Captain Marvel is in that, so do we need to see this first? I reckon it's about as important to see CM before seeing Endgame as it is to see Dr Strange before seeing Infinity War. Martin

Probably for the best, but if you know who Captain Marvel the character is then I doubt knowledge of Captain Marvel the film will be essential.

Just seen it. Larsen is good. There are some moments of sparkle here and there but overall it's a crushingly boring film. -Ralph

I agree with the general opinion here of it was pleasent enough, but not terribly ground breaking. One or two moments where I felt a touch bored but unlike in Black Panther for me they passed quickly here. Thought she was a bit all too powerful at the end really though. And it had been heavily signposted leading up to it so lost much of its impact.

Just got back, and I still don't really like Carol. I liked Monica being in it. Of all three marvel Captain Marvels, she's the one I actually always liked. So I have hopes for her in the sequel.
It was an enjoyable solid movie. But honestly, marvel is pretty reliable there. With the exception of Civil War, and Infinity War, marvel hasn't really produced any outright clunkers. So except for those two, even a "bad" marvel movie is still a pretty good movie. But that said, I'd put this down around the bottom of the pile.
I'd say it was pretty forgettable for me, like IM2, or Thor 2.

There are four Captain Marvel's.
Genis-Vell had the name before Carol claimed it.

Marvel's Captain Marvels are so boring I didn't even realize there were two different male ones.
Monica's the only one who's ever been interesting to me. (Loved her in Next Wave)

I don't think so. Mostly familiar with her from stuff she'd appear in in my orbit. Never really messed with Avengers comics, unless crossover events forced me to.

I find comic Danvers to be a bit 'just there' despite the better efforts of many creators. I found the film version more engaging due to the actor though I found the film she was in to be dull. I think she'll be fine in other, better, films.

The best parts of the movie for me were Fury+Goose. After spending soooo many films cultivating the Fury=Badass Mother F***er persona, it's exactly my sense of humor to have him just completely dissolve into incomprehensible babbling over a small cute animal. And the secret of his eye.

Civil War is one of the worst movies I've ever seen, full stop. It's based on the third worst (and second dumbest) marvel "event," and has the worst cinematography I've ever seen. Watching it made me physically ill with motion sickness (I never get motion sick, ever), and gave me a migraine. Civil War is the worst experience I've ever had with a movie, from a technical standpoint.
IW was just boring. Too much going on, too complicated a plot, not a good villain. Plus when you fake kill off borderline everyone, it's really hard to care about any of it.

What I liked about Civil War was that it left the viewer to decide which side had the stronger argument going for it, and didn't have a 'winner' who was proved 'right' at the end, and a 'loser' who ended up having to admit they were wrong. I liked the 'no right or wrong answer' dilemma. Very few action movies leave the question of who the viewer should be rooting for completely open and don't give you a right answer at the end. I just found that refreshing.
Haven't read the comics.

I also liked that about Civil War, and I found the antagonist's story and motivation convincing and even moving (Black Panther was great too). But I also agree with Toph about the visual style of the film, I also found it a bit harsh and headache-inducing.
The Civil War comics are, IMO, a squandering of a genuinely good idea that played well could have been really interesting. Unfortunately it was a Millar-led crossover so any concept of subtlety is out the window from the get go, and there was a clear bias in favour of Cap's group, very few writers attempted to make Tony's case. I think the tie-ins I liked best were Ms. Marvel as it happens, they at least had her conflicted.
I didn't care so much for Infinity War either. I enjoyed the scale and spectacle in places, but there was too much going on. People seem genuinely to be "omg!" about all the "deaths" but it's like they all collectively forgot how fiction, especially in big ongoing genre franchises works? There's only one death in the film that could (should) stick really.
