The first thing he drew that I read was a Strontium Dog story in the 1982 Starlog annual. At some point around here I would have read an installment of Portrait of a Mutant in a 2000ad while waiting at the doctor's surgery which a quick bit of research suggests is part 6 from Prog 205. When my Dad starting bringing me home copies of 2000ad in the early 300s Ezquerra was coming to the end of his first major Dredd run. I read The Prankster and a couple of parts each of The Starborn Thing and Requiem for a Heavyweight. He then moved back to Strontium Dog - a quick search of Barney indicates I may have read the first part of The Moses Incident but it's The Killing and Outlaw I recall. After that I read his Stainless Steel Rat for President and then it was more Strontium Dog for the rest of the time I was reading the comic. However I was also discovering his past work by that time: The Apocalypse War & Destiny's Angels, courtesy of the Eagle Comics reprints, Meka-City, Fungus & The Executioner via the Titan reprint collections. I can recall reading Necropolis at University and imediately recognising the artist, and then The Pit in newsagents in Epsom around when I started work. A rare US gig on Star Wars: By The Emperor's Hand. When I came back to Dredd, he drew Origins and then the closing installments of Tour of Duty. Much of his work in between has been read since, with Sector House and Brothers of the Blood being big favourites, plus his contributions to the PJ Maybe story. Always a joy to see his art in The Prog with Block Judge, recently collected in The Megazine, and Ladykiller being his major Dredd works alongside some Strontium Dog and some Cursed Earth Coburn for the Meg. If my files are right his last published work was Cursed Earth Coburn in Meg 396, 4 months ago. Although I never met the man himself, Ralph & Andy got me a copy of a compilation of his work and had it signed and sketched in ast a convention appearance he did a few years back: Loved his art, really distinctive stuff. Such a shame he's gone, huge loss to the comics comunity especially here in the UK.

yeah real shame, created some fantastic characters and they live on in current storylines, which I agree the meg and prog were brill overall this month(and week)!

I just can't wrap my head around the fact we will not see any more work from him. The man was a machine and still pumping out high quality work on 2000AD and The Megazine to this day!
One of the all-time greats.

First Norm Breyfogle and now Carlos Ezquerra.
Honestly reeling at these losses. The first time I became aware of his work was Requiem for a Heavyweight, and there was always something about it, but I never quite loved it the way it deserved and then reading the Countdown to Necropolis something just clicked and that was it.
The fact that since Prog 2000 Strontium Dog was pretty much in his hands alone , not to mention pre Final Solution as well, so it was his strip, more so than Dredd, who has had more than a few artists guide him along the way, the likes of Apocalypse War and Necropolis being absolute masterclasses.
I'm not sure how I feel that we won't see anything else from him. He's been a fixture in comics and my comics for so long.

Sometimes I can see Andy's Twitter pics, sometimes it looks like he's making blank posts. When I can see them I scroll back and catch up on all the ones I missed. Temperamental computers... Martin

Martin Then you might want to revisit the Lost Light Sketchcards thread, I've relinked the posts with the more reliable Instagram. Some nice TF pictures to look at.
