Why not?
Maybe they were all Decepticons who defected, like the Rotorforce.

You can if you want.
But what I was thinking is more swapping the tape Soundwave or Blaster comes with, which does vary, for another one.

Hang on, Ralph puts tapes bought separately to Soundwave or Blaster in them??

Indeed. Clearly Ravage can't go in Soundwave because he didn't come with him.

None of their text specs mention fitting in Soundwave.

In no actual order of preference:
Minicons
Energon Weapons
Energon Powerlinxing
Standardized pegs
Micromaster bases (it still irritates me to this day they didn't dust those off for minicons)
Powermasters
Adjacent to the subject, so while not quite interactive in the spirit of the thread, but so strongly thematically linked it may as well be: TFP Beast Hunter Autobots- not big on TFP molds do to below average quality (but in hindsight, are stellar compared to nuRiD, and Studio Series), but I loved the mad max style and beast capture gear.
Also special note are Headmasters and Titanmasters. Headmasters always fascinated me as a kid, on a conceptual and fictional leven, but I always felt the gimick ruined otherwise good toys. In hindsight, maybe they just never took the gimmick far enough to be fun? Knowing about the independent nebulons they put out in Japan, and all the concepts that never got made? Had they pushed the headmasters and targetmasters like they are the titanmasters and battlemasters, I might have enjoyed them both better as toys. On the flip side, I don't enjoy the Titanmasters as a concept, and especially not fictionally... but I can't deny the toys themselves are some of the most fiddly fun toys we've had in a LONG time. They beat the snot out of CW and Primemasters.
Least favorite interchangable gimmick: Primemasters- they're absolutely worthless on every level. They just make what would be awesome Pretender updates be completely wrong. Their interconnectiveness to their line is barely more than conceptual. I will admit though if you're gonna botch a linewide gimmick, there are worse ways to go. They're so worthless that you can toss them aside and the line doesn't suffer one single iota. However, if you were to ignore the titanmasters, you'd have a line of nothing but headless robots (except Optimus).

The Doctor: Is it OK to put Kingdom/Legacy Blaster's Eject in Evolution's Twincast? And, vice versa, Evolution Twincast's Rewind in Kingdom/Legacy Blaster? #AskingForAFriend

Yeah, they go off on missions when they aren't in a chest.
