Tonight, 9.05pm Channel 4.
Probably the most visually artistic and beautiful martial arts movie ever made.
Easily my favourite of the genre (better than Crouching Tiger / House of Flying Daggers and much, much better than Curse of the Golden Flower), but it's extremely stylised, and so probably not for those who like their martial arts action realistic and dirty.
Lots and lots of plot twists and turnarounds.
And it's going to be broadcast in Mandarin with English subtitles, thank God.

I agree it's a magnificent film, along with all the others you listed there but I wouldn't put it in the same genre as '...Golden Flower', which is more of a political (melo)drama with a bit of martial arts.
I pretty much love anything that comes out in that style of film, though...

I've a lot of time for "Hero" (although I didn't watch it at the weekend - my sister has just returned the DVD so I have it on hand again), it does have some fantastic cinematography and choreography.
I'd hesitate to name it as my favourite martial arts film, mostly because I see Wu Xia as being pretty much a genre to itself. There are so many ground rules that mark out the edges of the sub-genre that making a direct comparison between "Hero" and, say, "Police Story" feels like comparing apples and oranges (both fruit, but don't have much in common besides that). Of the limited Wu Xia I've seen I would rate "Hero" as my favourite though - I quite like what it does with its narrative and it feels like it has a stronger direction than "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" (unsurprising considering the latters bitty heritage).
My sister, interestingly, prefers "House of Flying Daggers". She's not convinced that "Hero" quite warrants its running time.

As for Zhang Ziyi (who stars in Crouching Tiger, Hero and House of Flying Daggers), cross-ref. to wolf character in Red Hot Riding Hood. You lot can keep Megan Fox. If you liked Hero, Mr Shockprowl, try these: Martin

Martin I'd really rather not - she's not my type at all, but I think I would have to second your reference there in regards to Zhang Ziyi - she is rather special. This might actually be the right thread to ask a quick question in actually - has anyone seen a film called "Seven Swords"? I've been considering seeing it in due course but I've heard mixed things, wondering if anyone has a first hand opinion of the film? Karl

I've been considering seeing it in due course but I've heard mixed things, wondering if anyone has a first hand opinion of the film? Haven't seen it, sorry. From what little I've read/seen, I get the impression there's it's more focussed on war/blood and less on art/beauty than the three above. The massive, massive death count of faceless soldiers is what I found somewhat distasteful about Curse of the Golden Flower, and why I haven't seen it again or bought it on DVD. Felt the same way about Musa (The Warrior), though actually, that was more about the blood/gore than the number of deaths. This may be the same. But it's purely a matter of taste. Martin

Martin Yeah, that fairly much matches the impression I have been getting about "Seven Swords" meself. I'm swaying towards giving it a miss I think. I'm not so much about the body-count in honesty so I'm not at all sure that it is my thing. Karl
