Prime gets hit with a couple of purple lasers first, so we can't fully place the blame on Hot Rod. Perceptor is also to blame for not having enough medical knowledge. Ratchet probably could've saved Prime, and who killed him? Starscream with Megatron. It's a tangled conspiracy, but Hot Rod is involved. HotRod set everything in motion. Made sure Ratchet, who could repair Optimus, and Prowl, who would clearly be the most effective leader during Optimus' recovery, were TEMPORARILY incapacitated. Interfered in Optimus' battle with Megatron, giving the defeated Decepticon leader the chance to grab the augmented blaster that he'd planted. And, after Megatron's purple blasts weakened Optimus, finished off the Great Prime with his own orange laser beams! The cunninh murdering bastard. Utilising his Techspecs rating of 10 in intelligence. |

Ratchet probably could've saved Prime, and who killed him? Starscream with Megatron. No, in the animated movie, Starscream with Megatron temporarily deactivated Ratchet. Hot Rod killed him (and Prowl) when he blasted the shuttle and caused it to explode. Martin |

Ah the conspiracy goes beyond that as we don't see the shuttle exploding into bits, merely crashing somewhere off camera. But then they then had Ratchet sealed up in a big flying tomb ship to stop him being able to repair Optimus after the dust settled and Unicron was dealt with.
Also, who shot Wheeljack?

No! I love Optimus. I'd have been quite happy for him to stay alive. I just like the svelte curves and flared boots Rodimus has in his MP form. He just looks so damn good. And G1 Hot Rod was a cracking toy.
