Well, I picked this up [#1] and thought I would give it a go. Unfortunately I found it an extremely hard-slog. The majority of it seemed to be comprised of equal parts movie prequel and brief recap of the last section of the film. Not much in the way of meaningful story content really.
Not a big fan of the art in all honesty - the planet, robots and their spaceship all seemed to be drawn in the same spiky, convolute style that made it difficult to pick out which was which in some panels.
It has had its issue to impress me and get me onboard, but hasn't really managed to do the job. I don't think I shall be bothering with the remaining issues of this. Anyone want the first issue?

I'll give it a spin, if I may be so bold, Karl. Cheers!

I hear the prequel parts mean it can't fit in continuity with the Titan comics.
I know which I'd rather read though.

I hear the prequel parts mean it can't fit in continuity with the Titan comics. I suspect it probably doesn't , covers some of the same immediate timeframe but has some differences in what actually happens. So I doubt that it would match up. Me too. I got a certain amount of enjoyment from the Titan stuff, whereas this left me feeling nothing but a few quid lighter. Karl

I wonder what Star Screams Starscream thinks of the comic?

I didn't think it was all that bad and there's nothing in this comic that contradicts what happens in the Titan issues to be honest. They aren't referred to or anything but there are sufficient gaps to allow them to take place.
Biggest issue for me was the colouring being far too dark on this issue. There's a shot pretty much recreated from the film, the one where Starscream lands on the Hoover Dam (in broad daylight in the film) and in the comic it looks dull, rather than bright and sunny.
As for the movie designs......well I'm not as down on them as Karl but I think they work best when there are humans on panel along with them. The scenes on Cybertron were just a mishmash of angled metal. Not the fault of the artist at all, sadly it's the aesthetic he has to work with.

I quite enjoyed this. A promising start, I'll give it that.
As for the character designs, I think the majority of the Titan artists have more of a grasp. I think they appreciate that they're drawing "actual" "real" robots rather than cartoon characters.

I read this last night and found it completely impenetrable, both story and art. There seemed to be loads of bits of Brad Mick movie quoting going on that was meant to make me go, wow it's _that_ bit, but as I've only seen the movie 1 and 1/2 times most of it was totally above my head – I wonder what somebody who liked the film, sees the trade in a bookshop and buys it will think of it . Even worse than HoS (which I thought stank) and on a level of badness with the worst of the DD crossovers imo.
I've got issue 2 to read tonight. Hope it gets better.

I read a copy of Andu's #2 and it did nothing for me. Lacked the zany fun of the UK movie stuff. The horrid art didn't help matters.

I've got issue 2 but have still yet to read it mainly because issue 1 just seemed too cluttered for my liking. There were too many frames on each page and it seemed like it was trying to fit far too much into each issue.

I have to agree with Andu that with regards to the art, I don't think the movie designs lend themselves well to the comic page. They were designed to make the robots look as realistic as possible onscreen but are very hard to distinguish on the printed page. The murky colouring dosen't help either as also pointed out. I'm not totally onboard with the story yet, simply because I don't think there's that much they'll be able to do that will have any long term effect. The status quo will have to remain with the main characters if they want to fit in to continuity with the second movie. The only players in any real danger are the ones not featured in the actual movie.

That's a bit harsh isn't it? Granted, it's the first story for Chris Mowry and may chug along a little, but I don't think it's anywhere near as bad as the DD crossovers. They started off bad and had the chance to improve with time but just progressively worse.

Though the DD stuff was turgid (there's one or two I haven't read), at least I understood them, movie issue one left be genuinely confused.
Thankfully, issue 2 is a lot better: structurally the story is better constructed (even managing a half decent cliff-hanger), the panels are generally less crowded, and, with Earthmode Starscream the focus, it was much easier to understand who’s who!
Not a classic, but much more encouraging.

I stuck with this mini-series till the end.
I enjoyed the story, a lot of the characterisation and dialogue. The artwork was a chore to decipher a lot of the time, and I don't think the colouring helped.
In fact, comparing this to the Titan movie stories, with the brighter colours (to be fair, sometimes too bright), I think I prefer the way the Titan artists have handled the film's robot designs.
I'd mildly recommend this to only the most hardy of fans of last year's film and those who know the not-seen-on-film toy characters particularly well. Myself, I found it very hard to tell a lot of the characters apart.

Was planning on picking this up in TPB form (just for the sake of completionism, I've read everything IDW have put out so far except for the reprints, this and AHM), but it sounds like I'd be better off saving the money.
Cheers!

It makes me sad that stuff like that goes unused properly when AHM stalks this Earth.

Yeah, I got the trade the other day and thought that pic was pretty good. Quite enjoyed the story. Fitted in very well with the tone and feel of the movie itself which I feel a lot of the later Titan strips lack.
