Inherently ridiculous? INHERENTLY RIDICULOUS?! THAT'S MY ENTIRE LIFE YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT! Having thought about The Docktor's SHAMEFUL statement all day, I am still shocked and stunned! Action must taken....

Nemesis Prime and Ultra Magnus repaints. It was cool in RiD, but that was a repurpose of a previous line's figure. Then it just got silly. In fact, excessive repaints in general. The HasTak wanting to get more use from a mould and then that repaint spilling over into the fiction. Look at the 3 card brothers in RiD - let's introduce a super mode into the cartoon. Sometimes I forget the cartoons are just glorified adverts. That was before Hasbro. Hasbro had zero say in anything in that show because that was entirely Takara led and was happening during Beast Machines. Hasbro just used it as a filler when their Transtech plans (thankfully) went belly up. Takara put everything in the show, save for the "supermodes" of the spychangers. Anything that wasn't in the show, was an addition by Hasbro two years later to extend the line until Armada was ready. Hasbro didn't really start to embrace the repaints until Armada, which is where we see the two companies having very different ideas of what repaints should be. Takara had control of the animes, and usually defied Hasbro's wishes. Hasbro treated repaints as new characters throughout the UT. Takara preferred to keep up the "redeco=super mode" philosophy they started with Car Robots, and had the animes reflect this. It was okay (to me) in the context of Car Robots/RiD, because ultimately it was just those three. It was a very silly concept, and was an intentionally very silly show. It was part of the charm. But Takara drove it into the ground during the UT. On the flip side, from Beast Wars on, Transformers designs stopped being generic. You can't slap new colors on Rhinox, and have people buy that it's not Rhinox anymore. That doesn't work well for animals, and it doesn't work well for the characters. You can recolor Bluestreak green with camo pattern and it's easy to accept as both a believable new character (because the robot is fairly generic as opposed to Sideburn or X-Brawn), and as a car because cars can have any colors you want. But you'll never find a green rhinocerus. And you can never convince anyone that a rhinocerus is a hippopotamus (not without a lot of retooling) The few times Hasbro tried it, it just didn't really work (much as I love it, T-Wrecks will never not look like a red Megatron to me. Megatron is just so distinct with his dino feet, rex head and tail for arms). And the few opportunities where an animal (at least) does offer a well known color variant (bonecrusher could easily have been repainted in white as a new character), Hasbro never followed through. Normally I prefer a new character myself, But I think in the case of Beast Wars, Animated, and Car Robots, it's probably easier to sell a same character repaint, than it is to convince people that this person who looks exactly like Megatron/Sideburn/Bumblebee is a new character.

Pretender vehicles: what's the ******* point?
Let's say we get the Pretendr concept, TFs dressing up as organic humans, monsters and beasts
But vehicles? TRANSFORMERS TURN INTO VEHICLES ANYWAY!

It's a disguise! Here's comes Gunrunner the car, but he opens up and ... surprise! He's a lump of machinery that can be attached to the underside of a jet!

What the HELL is going on with that kid in that final advert? "I'm a gamer! I'm a skateboarder! I'm a bad CGI robot!" Are they trying to get across the concept of the Pretenders line whilst also appealing to all the hip and cool kids? In the sort of hip and cool way that a middle-aged marketing executive would think is hip and cool?
I don't mind the Mega and Ultra Pretenders so much - having the robots inside robots inside robots is just adding to the play value, especially when the inner Pretender also transforms. But the Pretender vehicles on their own are just pants - as said upthread, a vehicle that's actually a robot is kind of the core concept of the franchise anyway...

The Russians invented Pretender toys centuries ago. Ultra-Mega-Cosmo-Ultimo-Pretenders.
Toys in the Transformers toy line don't have to be Transformers any more than all Thundercats toys are Thundercats or all G.I. Joe toys are members of G.I. Joe. Mumm-Ra is a Thundercats toy but not a Thundercat. Similarly, Action Masters are proper Transformers toys but not Transformers (though their partners are Transformers).
