It was way to cliché for me. It's like a bad fanzine that thinks it's edgy, dramatic and the best story ever but I dound it actually very cringey. It just had no substance. I think that’s a really good description of it! It’s kind of what I thought Prime was, back when all I had was some vague episode descriptions (lots of Darkness!) and the complaints of fans (it’s not Animated!) to go on, but having finally seen that a couple of years ago it’s got a heck of a lot more going for it than Siege.

They went non-union for Rescue Bots Academy too. It's a scummy move. -Ralph

Ok, I'm sorry to be a numbnut, but is this an official cartoon? Was Combiner Wars an official cartoon? If they are/were 'official' Hasbro ordained cartoons- 1) why are they so shit, and 2) Why are they using questionable non-union voice talent?

Yes they are official, they're all produced by different companies for Allspark Studios - Hasbro's animation arm. The difference in quality is down to budget. Whereas something like Cyberverse is a proper TV show, the Prime Wars trilogy was a promotional piece designed for internet delivery rather than TV farmed out to Machinima to make. Siege is blurring the lines a bit because of the Netflix badge, but it's essentially a trumped up web show.
I think what that means is of the current shows, Cyberverse has to meet Cartoon Network's standards to be broadcast to a wider TV audience. Prime Wars was just tat that got put out on an internet platform no one used (Go90), so the standard didn't have to be so good. Siege has improved the quality just enough for Netflix to bite.

Hmmm. If they're of questionable quality, wouldn't they do more harm than good to a brand?

They don't care. It's about getting the product out as cheaply as possible.
And 99% of viewers don't care (or don't know) how the talent are compensated for their efforts.

Hmmm. If they're of questionable quality, wouldn't they do more harm than good to a brand? Hasbro will always go for the absolute cheapest option. And it has occasionally done more harm than good. Which is why they let Takara go with cheap anime studios for UT. Which is why they went with a video game studio for TFP instead of an animation studio. The cheapest option is why NuRiD looks like it's from the Cybertron era of animation. The cheapest option netted us Machima and Rooster teeth for GO90 "Prime Wars" and Netflix "WfC." It was Transformers Animated that's the exception to the rule. The last time Hasbro actually paid for quality was Beast Machines.

Hmmm. If they're of questionable quality, wouldn't they do more harm than good to a brand? I think it can do. This was something I mentioned a while back in another thread about how you can be put off a brilliant toy by the characters depiction. When Car Robots came out back in 2000, I loved the toys - and they are still some of the best made toys ever. But upon seeing the Robots In Disguise cartoon (that wasn't my cup of tea) I now just see (and hear) the annoying cartoon characters from that show when I look at the toys. Sort of like it put me off them. My daughter went through a similar thing with a La La Loopsy doll she bought (because it reminded her of the dolls in Coraline). But then they made a La La Loopsy TV series that as very preschool and it completely put her off that in a similar way. Sometimes, imagination is the best thing with toys. Anyone hate their siege toys now, if they didn't like the show I wonder? Something I was relieved about was that I feared the show would make me want more toys.

RID takes a few episodes to click. Skybyte saves the Day is the one where it really clicked for me and that's something like 18 or 19 in.

Given that there are over a half dozen independent G1 continuities, and those include Sunbow and Machima, it'll take a lot more than a bad cartoon to turn me off of a G1 character's toy.

I think I can seperate it out a little. In terms of character Shock and Soundwave were same old same old, and Shockwave's voice was awful. But I found myself liking the designs more as they were on screen. It's like I saw the potential, had they cast closer to what I was expecting.

I don't remember when RID clicked for me. Things in the states were really messed up badly when it launched, a few episodeswere removed, and after two episodes it got put on hiatus for a couple weeks. It was a really traumatic time for us.
I was also kinda grumpy that all my really high priced japanese toys were suddenly everywhere for less than half what it cost me to gwt them.

Maybe being niave, and once again a numbnut, but- you remember 1984?
CARTOON. COMIC. TOYS.
A winning formula attracting LEGIONS of fans.
Kids aren't stupid. KIDS KNOW. Given 'em a good cartoon, like Rescue Bots, and good toys, like Siege. Then ride that cash-cow right into the bank. Moo.

On that note, I am actually glad I got most of the Siege toys (and the W*NC recolours) before I saw the show as I do think it would have put me off them. I recall Animated having a great line but the show annoyed me so I ended up shifting the toys because I didn't like the characters.
A lot of my like for toys in general is based on the character.

Alternatively, I hated The Last Knight film but love the toys (and concepts I guess) of Squweeks and Cogman.

Yup. Me too. Re movie toys. I bought a lot around the time of the second film because I was still in denial, desperately wishing as hard as I could that the films were not a crushing soul shitting upon disappointment. But ultimately, my disilusionment over films has caused me to pull-back completely from buying the toys, like lips pulling back after a sip of a surprisingly sour drink. And even made me move-on the movie toys that I thought were good.

Speaking of the toys: What was the massive spoiler for the show that the Spoiler Magnus toy revealed?
Was it the scene with the secret Playdoh things that powered the Autobots in their final desperate hour?
Was it when Battlefield Rung turned up with magical powers to save the day?
Was it when a slightly more battle damaged Magnus was revealed from that unknown mysterious robot in the cloak?

Was it when a slightly more battle damaged Magnus was revealed from that unknown mysterious robot in the cloak? The spoiler is that apparently there was no spoiler. Magnus' deco isn't particularly remarkable, rung never appeared, and energon never played any significant part, such as digging it up. I have not seen it, but this is according to what I've read.

Nope.
Spoiler Magnus is merely a different type of battle damage deco and comes with Rung the Battlemaster in orange see-through and three energon cubes in a tub of black Playdough.
Opening the box before seeing the show spoils nothing about it whatsoever.

There should have been an incredibly small unimpressive plastic turd in the box rather than all those other pointless accessories that had nothing to do with the show.

Be interesting to hear someone from Hasbro explain that. Their intention might have been that it was a spoiler to know what was in the box, ie, the way the Hub generally kept threatening to spoil for Ralph what it was when he wasn't wanting to know. However the way they announced it felt much more like it revealed a plot point.
I thought initially that the deco was designed to reflect the spoiler that happens to him in the middle of the story, but on reflection it isn't really any different from the other grimy decos. If they'd broken one of his spoilers off then it would make more sense.

Could be way off, but I think they outright said it was something relevant to the show. They even warned us "Don't open until you have seen the show!"
If the spoiler was the figure/box contents on their own merits, they'd have not said that. I also think they would have done it with a deluxe, as I think more peple would take a gamble on a surprise $20 toy, than a $60 one.

It's a weird concept all round. Especially as it was clearanced so fast. Which makes it seem all the more weird they're doing the same thing again.
