Okay, I'd not actually touched my Dinobot for years so had forgotten what the head looked like. It could work, yeah - the only thing I think I'd want them to do is make sure it had a visor, and not two, separate eyes. Otherwise, fine.

Woah, saturation to max on those two. Love it! They look amazing.
Still don't know why, but they do.

Heh, well, gentlemenies, that's as maybe, but but but what you certainly should NOT be thinking about is getting the yellow Sideswipe and the red Sunstreaker and-
HAVE SIDESWIPE AND SUNSTREAKER HOW THEY WERE SUPPOSED TO BE.

My bizarre, inexplicable fascination with the Shattered Glass set continues. I'm more excited about getting purple Ratchet than I was the proper one. I need more Earthrise repaints in weird colours. But I've still got no idea why.

It's that late G1 and G2 deco itch.
Optimus is just a really nice deco, and always has been. But Ratchet hits that "these colors are wrong, make no sense for the character, and clash" mark that early-mid nineties decoes do.
If Ratchet had swapped the white and purple, he would be a G2 deco.

I love ER Optimus. But it's needed on my shelf. Despite my disdain for SG, I always loved Op's deco and regret needed the $500 it was worth more than the toy itself. Though I have no need for an SG Prime, or shelf to put it on. So I decided that this SG Optimus will be my fiddle toy for this mold.
Ratchet is going to be G2 Ratchet.

It's that late G1 and G2 deco itch. I wonder. See, at the time I hated the G2 colours because they were just too Fisher Price for me, but I think I've found an affection for them now, but don't know why.

Why do I like them now Phil? Help me. I don't understand.
Actually, the red and green Dinobots are still daft. It's the new moulds of the time that work.
It was the Dinobots that did it. I saw those and raged at the insult to the might of 1985.

See, at the time I hated the G2 colours because they were just too Fisher Price for me, but I think I've found an affection for them now, but don't know why. It's the absurdity on all levels. In fiction, it's "why would they paint themselves like this?" In the real world, it's "who thought this was a good idea?" Which is amplified when you look at other toylines and realize everyone was smoking this same crack. Then you realize that while there were some absolute "wtf?" decoes, most were actually not terrible, and had an internal logic to how they work and (in some cases) why they were chosen.

I saw those and raged at the insult to the might of 1985. The Dinobots make sense, though. They were originally released in their G1 colors. When they were popular (because of course that are), they did another run, and added colors. There are three possible reasons, and I don't know which is correct: 1) They decided that three toys in the same assortment that are all grey was not a smart idea 2) They felt that the first assortment diminished the G1 originals 3) They wanted to make the second assortment distinctive from the first assortment, as well as tricking parents into rebuying these toys. Then they did a third assortment, and changed the colors again. Which gives the most weight to option 3. The color choices themselves are pretty logical choices. Blue, Red, and Green. Very straight forward, basic colors.

I suspect it was all partly to do with what plastics were on offer with plastic manufacturers at the time. Hence why the colour madness extends across different toylines.
It's a bit like that with high street fashion. One year many different brands will have the same range of colours/materials/patterns. How much of that is 'fashion' and how much of of it is pragmatism about what textile manufacturers are rolling off at the time?
Plenty of scope for a bit of input both ways.

So having chewed on this for a while, I think where this goes wrong for me (besides the fact I HATE sg), is Ratchet. If they had dropped him and had the trailer, I'd be much more inclined to get this. Because I do love the ER Optimus mold an awful lot. And this is the first use that's interesting (I do actually like SG Optimus's deco in general, and it's one of the few SGs I like. So much better than the stupid "rival color swap" concept). But it'll always feel incomplete without the trailer. Conversely, had I feel that SG Optimus is better suited from the Siege Optimus mold, and paired with SG Soundwave from either ER Ironhide or Siege Ironhide, would have been a bigger hit. I'd certainly feel more interested in it. In these past two months, Ratchet has actually become the main draw of the set, for me. It's funny, that.
