I've already texted some of the more geographically local chums already but....
We need some jobs done in The Loft Of Joy, mainly changing the unit across the middle of the room (which has collapsed) for a couple of higher Evars. Which would of course involve moving stuff off it first, removing the unit, building the new ones and putting the stuff back on. Which may also mean a floor tidy first.
Would anyone be up for a trip over sometime soon to do the work for me? Food would be provided.

Things are a bit up in the air for me, so I can't really commit to much at the weekends for now.

The loft job round one has been set for the weekend of June 1st when The Kaptain is joining us.
Attempts at using Jonathan as a probe droid to take photos of the current state of play has failed, so I have no idea what's what. I think we'll have to send Karl up, get some pictures and consider the next move.
Biplob Saturday lunch, Martin will be joining us.
I hope the bird I heard up there last night got out......,
The loft job round two depend on Burns' availability.

Further conversations with Burns and The Kaptain while in the bath - best thinking done in the bath - have helped clarify what I think we need to do:
1) Clear the floor in the rear portion of the loft to give us some space.
2) Clear the shelving unit across the middle of the room - this has broken and is leaning to one side alarmingly
3) Dismantle the shelving unit across the middle and bring in down.
4) Build a double width Ivar across the middle of the room
5) Fill it with the results of 1 & 2
The thought occurs it might be possible to double Ivar across the other side of the middle of the room, over the mag boxes, to increase the shelving room.....

Not sure yet if I can do June 1st or last weekend of June or first of July. Depends on a few factors I need to work out.
Whoever there on the 1st needs to be sent up to make a 360 video of the loft for an initial visual survey.

It might also help to describe the loft. I'm, working from memory, and feel free to correct me those who have been upstairs more recently than me....
To the right of loft hatch is a table with some loose large Zoids on it and boxed planet TFs underneath. Next to that is some boxes with Star Wars in it. Behind these are the eaves at the front of the house, all sort of stuff under there. Turning 90° anti clockwise we have the wall between us and next house up - that's shelves and on that is Robot Masters, Zoids, Brave and GI Joe. Mad Thunder lives at the top of on of these. Turning 90° again are the Mag boxes with a complete run of DWM and on top of which is a Deathsaurer and a Rolling Thunder. The Mag boxes are against the beams across the middle of the room.
In the middle of this tight U shape of storage is currently all the Christmas decorations which were not properly filed away under the front of the house last Christmas. Or the one before. And possibly the one before that.
To the left of the loft hatch isn't floored properly, but there's some shelves there with Lego train on it, some old hifi gear, and two Titan TF boxes full of Legends packaging.
Backing onto the mag boxes, on the other side of the beams across the middle of the room, is a wooden shelving unit with lots of boxed TFs from BW through to Generations on it. Turning 90° anti clockwise we have the wall between us and next house up again and again that's shelved: Micronauts and Microman, model railway, large Daleks, av leads. Turning 90° again, now looking at the back right of the house and working left we have a unit with Talking Daleks on, then one with mega sized BW and other smaller boxed TFs, a couple of comic boxes with stuff to go in them that I have in trades now, then a unit with some more modern TFs on. Behind this is the larger SW vehicles: an ATAT, a big Millenium Falcon and assorted others. Turning 90° again - looking at the wall between us and the previous house down and towards the water tank - are a couple of units with the CW and UW boxes on them. An Ultrasaurus sits at the foot of one of these.
The middle of this section is a bit of a mystery to me but I'm sure it's a mess and needs clearing: Siege boxes waiting for Omega Supreme's box to live in. Possibly two more Titan Boxes of various stages off fullness: I'm hoping one or more is empty and can take some stuff inside. Bags of TF backing cards. This is the bit we'll need to clear in 1 above.

Let us know when you're free. A future date you might want to bear in mind is the weekend of 20th July: The Kaptain will be in town again for RIAT at Fairford so he'll be busy in the day but .... Whoever there on the 1st needs to be sent up to make a 360 video of the loft for an initial visual survey. Indeed. And some static photos. I know what should be where but the back half is a mystery....

It occurs to me I can't place a lot of my Lego. 2 boxes+ of SW, Galaxy Squad, Alien Conquest, Dino, some old City..... All that must be up there somewhere...... and some of it may have to go.

Oh yes, it's up there, but where? Pretty sure the big command vehicle is to the right of the loft hatch but the saucers... ??????
One of the things we need to do if I can't get up there is be sure where everything is.
Sadly the Lego may be an obvious target to trim.

So a bit of a recce is not a problem at all - depending on the results of that we can plan the next step, and send me back up there that weekend to do prep work as necessary. Might be. Do you want me to bring my dad's steel rule down with me, so that I can take some dimensions up there so you can consider clearances etc? (It is one of the best tools amongst the many I inherited and has served me well over the years. Karl

Further intelligence has been obtained using a more advanced Probe Droid www.flickr.com/photos/philip_ayres/albums/72157708561488594There's three photos here that illustrate the scale of the issue Loft hatch, looking towards the back, and turning right The back was full. I nearly cried when I saw what it looked like. Fortunately the probe was able to carry out some extensive preliminary work. Large amounts of what you see in those pictures has now been removed or stored better. The probe has visited the far back right corner of the loft and sat in the chair, which is just about visible in the picture under stuff. I think for the purposes if doing the job we will consider point 1 above accomplished and we can proceed straight to point 2 strip the damaged unit. As I suspected front half of the loft is inaccessible. The Christmas decorations have been returned under the eves, bar the tree, but there's what looks like a chair's foam up there??

Bah-bu-bda-bah-buh! Probe Droids are very useful things indeed. Excellent - two of us to go up into the loft for disassembly duties! That is excellent.
Phil, do you recall whether the existing unit held together with screws or bolts? Basically would it be useful for me to bring my screwdrivers or my Allen key set for untightening things during the disassembly? Either or both sets of tools can be thrown in the bag as needed.

No idea.... but we have plenty of tools here. IIRC it will go flat ad can be passed down through the loft hatch
