There was something that needed to be fixed?
Wait, THEY'RE MAKING A SONIC THE HEDGEHOG MOVIE?!? After the amazing work of Detective Pikachu at realizing those cartoony animals and making them work in a realistic environment while remaining true to form, I eagerly await a trailer for this!

So a whole host of poorly paid animation staff are going to get screwed over doing this to the committed to release date.
Well done whiny people of the internet you have won a great victory this day.

Andy A studio's unrealistic crunch deadlines is unrelated to a studio making something horrible that people complain about. There's nothing stopping them from moving the release date. It happens with literally every other film ever.

People always complain it doesn't make them right. Look at how many people bitched and moaned about Chris Evans as Captain America.

I honestly don't understand Sonic Fandom, and haven't since the nineties.
I don't understand why people seem obsessed with having Sonic characters interact with humans (and they always seem to lean to anime or realistic humans, over cartoony ones that fit the general Sonic aesthetic).
This movie would have been a lot more exciting to me if it had been just another animated fantasy movie.

Because the fandom didn't make the film, so I'm confused. But it's always been a big studio thing to cross over such IPs into the real world, it adds more human interest to the story and makes it more marketable outside of the core fanbase. Look at Masters of the Universe or Mario Bros.

They are linked, because putting a cartoon hedgehog with non-stylized humans in a more or less normal human world has been a popular thing in the fandom for a long time, and has been done in fiction several times now. The movie is following what's popular with the fandom.
And this is very different than your examples of similarity. Because neither of those utilized straight up cartoon characters interacting with live action.
A more astute parallel to this would be Roger Rabbit. Though I would say this is worse because the wrongness of Roger Rabbit existing in a live action setting was the point. This is like if they had a game accurate CG Mario bouncing around with a live action Princess Toadstool for no reason.
This should have just straight up been an animated movie.

It looks to me from the trailer that Sonic starts in a very realised Green Hill Zone type world and uses a ring to warp to our earth/time. He's not a cartoon character in the film, which was the reason for the "realistic" design shown in the original trailer.
Edit: I think we're overthinking it. It's Sonic The Hedgehog.
