I have not owned a TV in over a decade. How on Earth do I get TV pictures on it? Back in the day I just pressed on and they appeared!

How old is the TV?
Do you have an Aerial? What sort?
It may well need a tune, go into the menu and look for setup or tuning.

As ever, the Hub proves to be comedy gold. Send Phil a picture of the set, Ralph. It'll depend how old it is. Flat screen, you can probably plug in an aerial, turn it on and find the auto tune option. TVs these days have on screen menus, you need to get to that. If it's an older pre-digital, you'll need a separate Freeview receiver.

Have you said, loudly but firmly, "Television on!"?

If it's an older TV it may not even have a digital tuner built in, in which case you'll need some kind of freeview set top box. I'm assuming it's not so old that it doesn't have HDMI, but may be worth checking this too.

It's a big flat screen, not new but not very ancient.
Have you mastered the input button on the remote control?
You will indeed need an aerial plugged into it. Possibly via a freebox if there is no inbuilt one.

I put the big lead in the hole in the wall. I am not sure what to do next.
It's not an urgent issue as I rarely watch live telly so it will be used for watching DVD's/blu-rays. I was just curious how to make it go.
The remote control is baffling.

When you say hole in the wall, are you talking about plugging in the power lead into an electrical socket?

There is a circle hole in the wall so I stuck a lead in it to see what would happen.

Did you plug the other end of that lead into the TV?
If so, send Phil a photo of your remote. You need to look for a button that says something like options, menu or home to get to a screen on the TV that will have a setup option to tune it.

I remember the days you just pressed a button and the pictures appeared! One button! ONE! ONE BUTTON!!! But you sometimes had to pop out the secret panel and re-tune manually by twiddling the dials. I always like the challenge of working out the TV in each new hotel room I visit. No two are alike. Sometimes the digital channel list is several years old and needs re-autotuning, sometimes the remote needs new batteries, and sometimes if they really want to thwart me they have the previous guest steal the remote and tell the cleaner not to notice this ahead of the next guest. But I do not enjoy the challenge of working out the shower. Now _those_ things need instructions. Martin
