One of our number has developed an unhealthy addiction and infatuation for the refreshment trolley on the train.... For those not familiar, here is one on the platform of a Manchester station this very morning, laden down with food and drink temptation for those who didn't have the foresight to brig their own or buy from Upper Crust/WHS This has led to a difference of opinion between said forum member and his chums. So OBVIOUSLY we must go to the polls. No Sausage option, because this is a straight choice and because the trolley does not serve sausages.

Definitely a trap. Although for some it is a guilty pleasure. Guilty being the important word here.

Since I have had to travel more, I have let The Trolley into my heart. It is now my travel companion!
For hot food there is the glory of The Buffet Car.

Only because they haven't removed the buffet yet.
We lost ours when GWR went from HSTs to IETs, but they'd been running them down for years.
I have never been on a service with both.

On some Virgin trains I have had both.
The Buffet Car is even better than The Trolley. It is more exciting because only a few trains have it and also they give you stuff in The Paper Bag.

They are like a Trolly but you have to get up and navigate a moving train to hand over your hard earned cash for over priced items. Hardly magical.

Every purchase I have ever made from a trolley on a train has been disappointing. Buying on the station is the only way to go.

I'm going to have to abstain, as my feelings on this matter fall into both categories. The trolley is a valuable source of coffee(*) when one has been either changing trains at stations too small to afford catering facilities, or with too small a window to actually get coffee. In that respect it can be a life-saver when you are making long journeys - especially in an evening after a day of work. It used to be extremely valuable on the first half of my Edinburgh to Billingham run on a Friday night when my mother lived down there.
On the other hand, the trolley is terribly expensive and it is far wiser to ensure that one is supplied with snacks and other food before boarding the train - especially if one has a long enough journey that you need something to pass for an actual meal.
Karl (* - it isn't _good_ coffee. It isn't even average coffee - but I've drunk the stuff that came out of the machine in the lowermost floor of the Strathclyde University library. That stuff kept me functional during the summer I wrote up my research project, and if you can drink that then most other coffee will seem like a cut above).

Twice. And only when someone else has paid for it or it was actually cheaper.
Now, the overnight sleeper from London to Glasgow. There you are treated like a king.
