During my long commute to the Ambulance Admiral HQ, I find myself in need of audio books, on CD. I'm surprised by the expense and scarcity of such things, for I only want FACTUAL. History mainly, bit of space and such perhaps. They're all so chuffing expensive!
Any Hubbers had experience of such matters?

I think the problem these days is that CDs are old tech. I like a good audiobook but tend to find that looking for them on Amazon inevitably leads you to audible, the online audiobook service that I think is now part of Amazon. The problem with them is that the cheapest way to get books is by subscription, which used to be about £8 a month for a download of one book, but they only play in the audible app.
Other options are using a library to rent audiobooks, I've done that before. You can use online searches these days to find the book you're after and request the library gets them in. Libraries offer CDs, or sometimes these days MP3 units with the book preloaded.
Another option is to use readings from the radio, BBC Sounds will give you access to anything that's been on Radio 4 recently and they have (albeit abridged) book readings every week.
Of course if you're looking for specific books you're probably restricted to how that book was released, but if you're looking for interesting spoken word there is a wealth of radio to listen to generally, and also thousands of podcasts on specialist topics. For example if you've not listened to it, there are over 100 episodes now of the Infinite Monkey Cage on the Radio 4 site to download - science with an element of comedy hosted by Robin Ince and Brian Cox. You'd probably like that.

If you're restricted to CD because that's what the car plays, there are ways round that too. For many years I used a small FM transmitter to 'broadcast' audio to my car radio. If you used something like that you could just plug it into your phone's headphone socket and it would broadcast any audio it played to the radio. Edit: looking on eBay, it seems these days you can get devices like that that plug into the lighter socket and receive Bluetooth signals, then broadcast that on FM to the car radio. You've hit the problem on the head there, Pins old boy- I'm SO FAR behind the times I virtually live in a cave. I like to just 'stick in a CD' and listen. When did CDs become old tech?! I still miss cassettes!. Piggin' fast moving world.
The library is great idea though. I'll check them out. Some in ebay, but even they are expensive.
I suppose I need to wake up and smell the 21st century.

What you'll find with the library, well I do, is that they have almost nothing on the shelves, but have access to tons if you can access their database to search. At mine it costs 70p to ship in audiobooks from other libraries.

And in the long term I need to pull myself together and EMBRACE THE TECH.

Hang on then, does your car dashboard have Bluetooth but you're just not sure how to use it? Does it have a line in? That's been pretty standard in cars for years. My car is 2011 and it has line in, usb socket and Bluetooth. Three different ways to get audio it of the speakers.
I use my iPod through the car speakers via Bluetooth every day.

Fuck long term, Shockers. You're younger than me. You can do it. What I do is still old fashioned because iPods are extinct these days. You can't buy them but I don't want to switch to my phone because phones are so big. Step at a time. Let's kick it up a gear. Find out what kind of inputs your car has. Pinwig has spoken.

My ol' girl's an 09. She ain't got nothing like Bluetooth. She's classy. CD only. But I am looking into a new car, if I can magic the money outa my arse.
So, spell it out for me, Pins. You download the things you want to listen to onto your phone, and connect your phone to your car's Bluetooth, and then it plays? (I'm not kidding here, I am this out of date).

I'm still impressed with transportable phones! Some people call them 'mobile phones', but I don't think that'll catch on. (Good idea though, thank you, 3)

Like you can have Bluetooth headphones, which connect without wires to a Bluetooth audio device so you can hear it. Bluetooth isn't internet wireless, it's self contained - you 'pair' two devices so they can communicate with each other without wires.

Problem these days for once listen stuff is the volume of discs it needs. A big book can take upwards of 20 CDs. A compressed digital format is much easier unless it's something you want to keep.

True, Goblet of Fire is 24 discs. This is where it's a shame audio didn't need to adopt Blu-ray like video did. Video needed the capacity for HD, but with audio you'd be able to put an artist's entire catalogue on one disc in CD quality and no company would want to do that. But for audiobooks it would have been great.

As Pinwig says, BBC Sounds is worth a punt (if you can deal with the crap interface) as are libraries. I also buy a ton from bigfinish.com (though mostly digital).
