Is anyone up on current PC tech? I'm a bit detached these days. Having built my own PCs in the past I find currently I'm not sure what I'm doing.
I'm about to change out my ancient iiyama monitor for a new one, but will also change my graphics card because the display is badly affected by a red banding problem, vertical red stripes across the screen. Pretty sure it's the card rather than the monitor, but a 19" 4:3 monitor is well past it these days. I want more screen space so I'm upping to a 27" 1440p.
I don't game on my PC other than retro stuff from GOG, so I only really need a card that'll run a 1440p monitor in its native resolution for office and graphics work, with occasional forays into old strategy games. Do I need to go as far as a gtx 1660? Or will a 1060 work? My current card is a gtx 750 Ti, so I know I'm buying a PCIe card.

In Star Trek they have isolinear chips and they make them go by pulling them in and out of slots until Geordi rolls under a door.

1060 tends to be a decent card for the vast majority of things. double check in the tech specs it runs 1440 but i cant imagine it wouldn't. The only other thing is some older motherboards are a bit funny with the VRAM that newer cards use so check the card supports the motherboard (if you need to know how ot find out you motherboard you can just view the specs in devices)
The 1660 is still only about 2-3 lines down the gaming list so the comparison on it is usually good.

Whooooo aaaaaare youuuuuuu??? -Ralph Only PC's in the house are low-specced ones for the Elder T and for his pigeon stuff so no need to be as aware of what's going on. That will probably change in the future as I really can't see me getting a mac again, unless something drastically changes.

Must make use of that fact in the new year.

by all means We were gifted a load of old macs from the art department last week so today has been spent ripping the screen off one and looking at the internal mechanisms, ive wondered what the inside of one looks like for years, its actually very impressively made (i still hate apple tho)

Stroke of luck. I got the new monitor, which prompted me to really think about the card I needed. This was when I learned that HDMI is actually newer and better technology than DVI, and while the DVI port on my card would output at 1080p, it might have an HDMI output that would go higher. So I checked, and not only discovered in the dark and dust behind my PC tower that it does have an HDMI output, it also has a displayport one too! I had no idea because I was going on memory and not actually checking the brand of the card itself.
So I've just wired up my new 1440p monitor and it works absolutely fine - no red banding problem that I was getting from the DVI output. So having been just about to spend £250+ on a 1660 graphics card, I now don't need to spend anything.
The only problem is that now the Hub is very, very small indeed in the middle of a massive screen. Tiny text!

Woah. That must make Shockprowl's big font outbursts absolutely enormous. I'm really liking the pin sharpness of this monitor. The clarity is amazing.
