My recollection is it isn't that bad but when it's starting to build to a climax it gets suddenly cut off.

It was awful.
I haven't read the tie-in Time Odyssey books.

I liked those. Ralph must beware though that Stephen Baxter co-wrote them and Ralph doesn't like Stephen Baxter.

The Monolinths have to be one of the most distinctive, compelling, awe-inspiring, unique alien probe/alien reveals in all science fiction, particularly on screen. As a child I remember being simultaneously terrified and fascinated by them, utterly transfixed.

Yep. Absolutely. They are right there at the very top of the awe inspiring sci fi list. I even managed to wangle writing one of my A-Level Eng Lit coursework pieces on 2001 by comparing it to Thus Spake Zarathustra.

Sounds like the Monoliths from 2001. Which one of you is Moonwatcher?

Nice figures, but I want my 2010 actions figures with John Lithgow and Roy Schneider.
As much as I love 2001 for sheer spectacle, I think I prefer the 2010 movie (and novel more).
