I've been pondering this. I reckon the top is the right way because the side one has a flap that's really hard to tuck back in if you want to close the box again.

When I haven't been ripping them asunder and rubbing them on my arse, the top flap has been my choice.

(I don't actually rip them asunder, it just makes too much mess and I'm afraid of loosing bits. So I open in an orderly way, via the top flap but then stomp them flat and put them in the recycling.)
