Yeah, Road Rage looks great, somehow so much better than the Tracks colours. Reports about the quality of the Tracks mould aside, I'd be happy to own both if I could!

Grimlock came in!
Mirage is not a toy I would have bought, given a choice. And I was, and I skipped it the first time it was released with this deco.
Remolding it to look exactly the same while transforming slightly differently is not a way to impress me.
I would have rather the budget that went into retooling him, go into Grimlock's deco.
Now onto the part that matters: Grimlock.
In person, he's not as nonsensical as he seemed. There is definitely a cohesive idea behind his deco.
I'm pretty sure he was directly patterned on or at least heavily influenced by a real animal. In hand, he looks like a real bird, i just don't recognize it (and it's familiarity is driving me crazy!)
Either way, they chose to make him look like a real believable animal, instead of a Cruella Deville's worst nightmare.
However, there are a couple problems with this-
· They didn't put ennough budget into it, as it loses cohesion in the places they had to stop painting (the bottom half of the tail,lower jaw, the thigh pieces that become the false head/chest pieces).
· It's a weird flex to worry about realistic decos now, when I'm pretty sure there are no gorillas with purple chests, or red tyrannosaurs with blue stripes (or purple tyrannosaurs for that matter).
His new robot head is great. The whole thing is nicer in hand, and the deco was made for the beast mode in mind, over the robot mode. Not needing to be show accurate, it fixes one of the biggest complaints people had with Dinobot- the gold ball hips in his beast mode chest. On Grim, they're white to blend in.
I appreciate what they're trying to do with the deco. And if BW Grimlock didn't exist, it'd actually be a pretty great one (though still with the problems mentioned above with it needed more paint budget).
But unfortunately, Grimlock already exists, and this isn't him.

But we've had toys with altered alt mode decos before. The classics strike planes had different wing designs to to original toys, but we didn't say they weren't Starscream et al.

A more apt comparison is if the first and only Smokescreen update we got was primarily blue, and got rid of all his racing details because "its not realistic." It may look like a lovely toy, but compared to the slavish updates he's partnered with, it isn't Smokescreen.

He didn't, The Subaru and the Datsun are wildly different colours. You might as well say that because it had the racing stickers it would have been okay as Jazz, Wheeljack or Mirage. Mirage would even have been closer, as they're both predominantly blue!
I'm not trying to be argumentative, by the by, I just don't understand how because Grimlock isn't spotty, he's not Grimlock anymore when that's the only change.

It isn't the only change. He's massively different. His base color is now dark grey (a color that doesn't even exist on the original), and almost all the white is paint. And he's partnered with a toy who got an entire retool and reengineer just to be like... Ten percent more accurate than he already was (which was already extremely accurate).   So it's a really weird flex in a line who's entire existence is based on "be as faithful as possible" |

I think they could have gotten a better result and with possibly using less paint, had they cast the entire toy in white, and then painted every non-white part. Gold shins and crotch (and only those. Didn't need any on thighs or feet), dark blue/black helmet, dark blue spots, eyes (all six), claws.
Again, it's a nice deco on it's own merits. I reiterate that I'm not complaining that I think it's ugly, or bad.
