Phew. Sanity restored. Except I now want a Doubledealer to play with. Toy Fu can help you with that.

On the one hand I don't mind the comic book style and I quite like the indivdual little battles. It sets up rivalries, but on the other hand it looks like all the 89 and 90 illustrations where done with the same budget and time table (or much smaller) as each of the earlier paintings. Odd that the Euro artwork reverted to a slightly more impressive look, I would have thought that without the North American market and considering the lack of new moulds that the line would have taken the cheap option on art work. Having said that what the hell is going on with Thunder Clashes head? Andy Seriously what the actual hell is going on with his head here

Toy Fu can help you with that. !!! Ooh. I have very much enjoyed making purchases of random con souvenirs from Toy Fu in recent years. It's become a highlight. Picking up something for fun that isn't on a 'to buy' list just to investigate.

I don't recall noticing Doubledealer on that art before either, but I blame the Return of Optimus Prime VHS cover being a cropped [and altered] version of the art:

That VHS cover beguiled my dreams for many years. I did not get to see THE RETURN OF OPTIMUS PRIME until whenever it was released on DVD in the UK...and was utterly confused when Prime did not come back from the dead in his PM form! The cover of the VHS lied!

That cover is really interesting. I've never compared that to the original. You'd think back then the idea of layered images wouldn't exist, but where did Prime's other leg come from? That's quite cleverly done for the time.

Pre-photoshop, so would require new artwork. I'd expect some kind of photostats of the original artwork, cut and paste to make a new visual, get someone to redraw the thing.

I think you're right there. When you examine those two images really closely you can see that's exactly what happened. His left leg for a start is a mirrored copy of the right airbrushed so the shadows fall the right way, so it's been flipped and traced, and he's missing his actual lower leg from the original image. There are loads of little details in that video cover that look like the original at a glance, but are actually completely different!

The outline is pretty close apart from the gun arm being adjusted, probably to better fit the VHS case shape. Oh and the motion blur which is completely different for some reason.
I cant quite figure out how the lower leg would have connected to the upper leg on the boxart version. It looks like it would have been really thin.

WHAT IS THIS WITCHCRAFT

Also I never realised what a weird angle Prime's leg is at in the original

Even more confusing (to me) is seeing the Japanese and Europe Overlord box art together. They are sort of the same (and you think it's just mirrored) but they are different... It looks like they decided to flip the image for some reason then realised that the shield should be on the edge of the box and that flipping the image would leave the torso weapons the wrong way around. So the legs have been mirrored and everything else redrawn from scratch. All of which would make sense if something about the box layout required it or it just looked better, but it doesn't and it doesn't. Just bizarre amounts of effort for no obvious reason.

So essentially they kept everything from the waist down, and everyting above is new. That's just bizarre.

Has this been done in a poll before?
If not, after looking at some of the box art battles just now and not being able to decide which one is my favourite, I thought I'd do it. So, which is the best (painted) Box Art Battle? Perhaps we can do the more comic book style art of 1989/1990 separately - or is one of these your favourite so much that you feel it should be included here? Also, what do you love so much about these and alternatively, is there anything that just frustrates you like having too many Grimlocks flying around in space?
