Oh my, that is very nice indeed.
If I had that kind of money we would have a bidding war on our hands.

I don't know anyone who could afford to drop a few thousand on that. But imagine if they did

If the bottom corner wasn't damaged I'd be seriously interested.

So how much would anyone here actually pay for it?
Wonder if it would be possible to construct a high quality print of it in photoshop using box scans.

That's a good question. To be honest, as long as it was the original I'd probably be happy to go as high as 2,000, but no more. I'm sure it will go for ten times that though.

All the pre-G2 TF back of the box art may be found here: www.botchthecrab.com/gallery.asp?gallery=2The two 1985 variants and the Fortress Maximus one are things of beauty. I'd certainly pay any three figure sum for one of those originals. At the other extreme, we have the 1990 Battlefield Headquarters that you'd have to pay me to keep in my house. Martin

Hadn't seen the Battlefield HQ one before.
ASTOUNDING.
I like the little chap who is shaking his fists in impudent fury.
EDIT: There's a fair bit of fist shaking in the Micromaster battles. Brilliant.

The original box art were excellent. Shame they reverted to comic book style illustrations in later years.

On the one hand I don't mind the comic book style and I quite like the indivdual little battles. It sets up rivalries, but on the other hand it looks like all the 89 and 90 illustrations where done with the same budget and time table (or much smaller) as each of the earlier paintings.
Odd that the Euro artwork reverted to a slightly more impressive look, I would have thought that without the North American market and considering the lack of new moulds that the line would have taken the cheap option on art work.
Having said that what the hell is going on with Thunder Clashes head?

It's always bugged me that Metroplex's head is showing. He's not a micromaster base afterall.

Blimey, good interview. Wish I could remember if he's the same guy who was at the Hasbro tour with the art work. I wonder if we'll be seeing him list some of his prototype TF. I don't if I've ever seen some of the proper pre production toys on ebay. I dare not think what they would go for.

What other stuff has he done? Surely his only notable artwork isn't just a few illustrations on TF toy boxes.

I'd definitely go for Metroplex if I had that kind of money. As it stands, I'd have to sell some of my internal organs to raise that sort of cash.

But it's nice to see the art anyway. Amazed that much of that stuff still exists.

Yeah it is amazing it's still around. I love the original battle scene, love it love it love it. Wish they'd do comics based on that style (similar to the old UK Marvel early stories, War Within, Man of Iron etc, love that style).
Wonder if they'd trade it for a bossy yet highly entertaining three year old...

This is the first picture I saw of PM Op and today it remains my favourite of him! Packing a lot of firepower here too! Oh for a version without Landmine in the way! The joy of boxart battles!!! In the comic my primary version of Prime remains the PMOP version. I think he was in more issues in that body than in his original or Action Master forms. -Ralph

Also: look at the size of his head relative to what he see of his body and arm. His head is HUGE atop a tiny body!!! -Ralph To be fair, the toy head is huge too With tiny arms.

Yep - this was mine too (on the back of an Argos Nightbeat). I remember seeing the actual toy in a catalogue and being puzzled by it's strange proportions - but as with most TF toys, I just got used to it as that was how it was. I also remember wondering what Landmine was and as I saw the Double Targetmasters before Pretenders, I thought it was Tracer 'splitting' from another Nebulan toy. They do look similar. And how cool does Skullgrin look here?

It's an interesting blend of features. Prime has blue fists and swept down arm cannons (like Ginrai), the Pretenders are 'phasing' out of their shells (as in Masterforce), but remaining the same size (as in UK/US takes on the toys). And the Powermasters are all sort of shunted into the background with the focus on Pretenders and Optimus.. (like the earlier parts of Masterforce).

I hadn't realised how Masterforce centric this was. Even Doubledealer is there! I don't think I've ever noticed him before!

I love that box art battle, but there's something not quite right about Op's left arm - like his forearm is missing.
Also, it was highly misleading to use the pic on the cover of the 'Return of OP' video tape.
