Lego Batman is one of only two theatrical Batman movies that genuinely gets Batman. Mask of the Phantasm is the other.

I did not like the Lego Batmab movie. -Ralph ............ what the fuck Lego Batman was a great gag in the first Lego movie, but giving him his own movie just stretched the gag too far and didn't work. He worked as a supporting character much better. -Ralph

Well this thread went off the actual film. Saw it last night. I enjoyed the slow pace, but it'll be off putting for many. Sound design was excellent, from the creaks of leather to intimidating steps. Lots of interesting shots. Good performances from much of the cast, although kept flashing back to Tuturro in the Bayverse, which was a shame as his Falcone was decent. Focus on Batman as a detective. I approve. Character arc for Bats pretty simplistic, but at least it's there. Not a lot of Bruce Wayne. Which is good. Batman is only Bruce by necessity... Although would have been good to get a little more at the conclusion, standing with the mayor pledging in the rebuild of Gotham. But was this film trying too hard to be Se7en? Edit... Ps this film is pretty grim. Don't expect to find any sunny outside shots or smiles on anyone's faces.

Maybe because my expectations have been so low for so long but OH GOD THAT WAS SO GOOD! I was expecting it to be decent after everything I've heard but I wasn't expecting it to be good!
Still processing it.

'The Batman' wasn't my least favourite Batman film. That would be 'Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice', followed by 'Batman Returns'. But it came close.

Hmmm. Two people who's opinions I trust (well, more than The Doctor's, anyway) with two conflicting opinions about the film...

It's long, and like Stormski said, it has a very slow and deliberate pace. It has more in common with Silence of the Lambs (as a film, not plot), than it does what we've come to expect from standard superhero fair. It's a detective noir, with vigilantes. While there are several fight scenes, it leans much harder into Batman's detective side than any big screen Batman to date. It's not nearly as action oriented as previous Batman movies.
It's kinda unhinged a bit, too. It switches from from the "fbi hunts a serial killer" type thriller genre to almost slasher/monster thriller, because it often frames the confrontations from the bad guy's perspective, which was genius to show what's only ever been narrative (batman terrifying the badguys). I also think that while simplified, the relationships between Batman and Gordon, and Batman and Selina probably ring truer than any versions before. Kravit's Selina felt much more rounded than either Hathaway's or Pfifer's.
It is definitely not for everyone. But I think people tired of the extent of Batman's superheroing being just beating up badguys will probably be more likely to enjoy it than those who want live action cartoons (like the Burton/Schumacher films) or edgy Snyderverse wank.
Though I do wish we could have gotten Batfleck with a good script and a good director, because I still think he has the potential to be a great older TAS inspired Bruce Wayne. And a director and writers that actually understand Batman could have brought it out.

Enjoyed it, though he was a bit too bulletproof at times for my tastes.

The Batman is free on Amazon Prime at the mo so I'm giving it a second chance, as I couldn't recall any redeeming qualities from when I saw it in the cinema.
It remains the worst Batman movie in my estimation excluding Dawn of Justice and Justice League, but there is one aspect of it I think is decent - the script. But it's a script for a 2-hour movie stretched out over 3 hours, padded out with angsty music and pauses for Robert Pattinson to stare moodily off screen. If the director, composer and cast from the Dark Knight Trilogy had filmed this script unabridged and at 150% pacing so that all the dialogue and action were compressed into 2 hours, I think I might rate it highly.
But with this director, cast, score and editing... nah.
