So there's a new toyline that may have specific interest to Phil, called Snap Ships. www.snapships.com/It may or may not be a Target Exclusive line here? I'm not sure. But the basic premise is small scale Starships that have a modular build system. They also come with tiny pilots that are in scale with some of the smaller TF scales, like deluxe jets, legend/core cars, and such. I picked up a set today and it's actually pretty neat.

I like the look of that! How big are the ships?

They range in different size sets.
But each block is the height of a headless lego minifigure. The set I got has three plans for different ships, and is probably between a TF Deluxe and Voyager. Put together it's not as big as ER Starscream, but it's quite a bit bigger than a deluxe.
Each block has five ports and a peg, then comes with lots of tech bits to plug into those ports, and you can configure everything however you like.

I'd say that long configuration is a bit shorter than ER Starscream's jet.

Quite large then. If those come out here I shall be all over them.
Do the cockpits open? The little men fit in them?

Yes. They're tiny and come in human, and a couple different aliens. Apparently this is a show on Youtube?
But the tiny figures have a tiny balljoint hip to allow them to sit.
The little bit I can gather is that the good guys (human and aliens) and evil aliens (different aliens) are competing to acquire ancient extremely advanced technology which comes in the form of surprise superpower weapons you can outfit on your ship, like those old flying shooter videogames.
The one that comes with my ship is just a spring loaded missile launcher (shoots three at once), but the fiction for it is that it shoots lances that fly around like Yando's whistle stick.

That's quite a neat idea! It almost feels old-fashioned, like a toy that would have appeared in the early 90s. The presence of that (really fun-looking) drop ship is maybe reinforcing that for me.
Remarkable the influence that the design work in Aliens still has down the decades.

I can see myself getting addicted to this line. I already hope they branch out into mechs, because I would very much love to have jointed pieces. I spent two hours last night just building different ships out of the set I have.

I received a few of these sets for Christmas and put one together this afternoon, just done a demo on the Zoom call. They now have a UK distributor, the website for which is here: interplayuk.com/collections/snap-shipsThe set I was fiddling with on the call is the one Toph posted pictures of above - the Sabre. It's £15 here and in the bottom configuration is 18cm long and pretty weighty. Really nicely produced kits - they have Lego style manuals for building, a catalogue type checklist and poster, firing weapons, a neat idea where a special piece of alien tech is hidden behind a sealed compartment in the box and a pilot that fits in the cockpit of the ship. The ship has a core build from cubes that feel a lot like multi-link, which you then add other bits on to. The pieces fit together snuggly and the kit comes with a special tool to disassemble the parts when you want to rebuild it in another form. It's completely freeform too - although the manual has three configurations to build from the pieces, you can put these together any which way.
