Not a mad Phil theory, this one is evidence based. Check out these '88 animation production model sheets for Sizzle and Fizzle. Note the colours and term "Sparkler Mini-Bot". I think we've just found out why they were used in the Marvel UK comic. Also Seacon Jawbreaker to add more enforcement to the idea.

Check out the design of the Autobot Shuttle:

The models seem to have been acquired by someone involved with Marvel UK (as evident by the Ark model having "shuttle" written on it) soooo... very likely.

Wouldn't be the first time Marvel Productions were left with information Hasbro updated and didn't pass on. The interesting thing is that this means the UK comic used the original idea before the changes.
