While a trailer with this much fighting Is definitely a bit exciting, I'm more intrigued by the "Ten Rings" Does this imply The Mandarin?
I know one appeared in Iron Man 3, As memorably portrayed by Ben Kingsley, But perhaps this could be a different thing, A criminal mastermind with Alien rings!

Remember the Blu-Ray extra on the Thor sequel which was a chore, I'm sure you can for it was the only thing which wasn't a bore we were briefly reunited with our friend Trevor, until some chaps kidnapped him for some endeavour, the hint was there that this might turn out bad for him, as he was being taken to the victim of his impersonation - The Mandarin!

Along with Widow, I finally got to see this too, and it feels so different to typical MCU movies!
I think this easily is in my tope five now. Maybe second.

Coming off the back of a two part climax that ended fifteen odd years of narrative, the current rosta of MCU films felt like it would be the B Listers trying to find a home in the aftermath to me - it looked disjointed and awkward on paper. Black Widow was good but gave me that impression because it's so far out of place in the sequence and I was wondering whether Shang Chi would feel like it didn't fit at all, but I was really impressed with it. It manages to keep a unique feel but has just enough hooks to let the viewer know there is something bigger starting up again. As a film in its own right, it's so much fun, lovely use of humour and the action sequences are some of the best in the entire franchise. That bus scene at the start is amazing. It really surprised me, top film.

It really surprised me, top film. Theres a great thread on twitter by a San Fransisco bus driver deconstructing that scene. I agree they've done a good job of not making it feel too much like here are the replacements. All the way back to Ant-Man theyve created origins that fit in to the wider world, but post end game it feels like more of a challenge.

I saw it a second time to give it another chance, but it still didn't quite click for me. Although Trevor is my favourite thing in it, as he was in IM3, I think I would like this film much more overall if it weren't in the MCU but a standalone martial arts fantasy. Maybe it's partly because I have no awareness of the lead characters' place in the Marvel comic book universe, it just felt like Marvel Studios wanted to do something in a different genre but rely on the MCU brand rather than the film's own merits to get the audiences in. It deserved audiences regardless, and I'd have gone to see it on the back of the trailer, and had more respect for it, if it had not been the next thing in the MCU and therefore an automatic sell. I felt this even more strongly with Eternals. This universe is already cluttered and full up, you don't need to keep making it bigger and bigger, at least in terms of cast of characters. Much more satisfying for me are Black Widow and Spider-Man: No Way Home, for giving depth and wider relationships to existing MCU characters rather than gratuitous ensemble-dumping of entirely new casts that should be made sink (Eternals) or swim (Shang-Chi) on their own without relying on ready-made MCU brand-loyal audience. I suppose I see Endgame as being the rightful climax to the MCU, and by all means make further films to explore the fate and backstory of members of the Avengers cast, if there are good ideas for doing so, but the time for universe-building and cast-building was the years leading up to Infinity War, and any attempts to do it post-Endgame just jar with me, as if they're trying to suck juice from an already-sucked slice of lemon.

That's a really interesting point but I saw the same idea the other way round. I think marvel are thinking that without the big hitters still in the series they're going to struggle to maintain the same formula with B listers after twenty odd films and are looking to push in different directions to keep things fresh. Shang Chi could have been Black Panther reheated, but it found its own niche.
I think the place for deeper exploration of the existing universe is through the longer play time in the TV series. Shows like Wandavision and Winter Soldier had the time and space to explore characters while maintaining links to the wider MCU.

Me, I enjoyed it largely because it didn't feel at all like a typical MCU. It felt more like the Kung Fu reboot than it did anything that came before it.

I think the place for deeper exploration of the existing universe is through the longer play time in the TV series. Shows like Wandavision and Winter Soldier had the time and space to explore characters while maintaining links to the wider MCU. I think there's still room for both. Black Widow didn't need to be a big screen movie, but Spidey did, and Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness (which builds on both Spidey and WandaVision) will surely be big screen spectacle. But I don't think things should be kept going just for the sake of it. I like to see some franchises either just stop or, better still, wind down when the big stories are done - like Babylon 5 did. I'd have preferred there to be no Star Wars cinema films made set after Episode VI. I'd prefer there to be no more big cast dumps into the MCU after Endgame (except where it's to benefit already established characters). That's just me. Martin

Shang Chi, Black Widow and Spider-man felt perfectly at home where they were and doing what they were doing, but I do think Eternals would have worked better on Disney+ and I increasingly think Hawkeye would have... maybe not worked better, but would have been great fun as a feature film on the big screen. Would have paired well with Black Widow too.

Just looked it up, minus credits and recaps Hawkeye is about 4 hours long. So it would need some serious edits to get its run time down. While some bits dont work as well as others I wouldnt want to lose and hour of it. Though I bet you'd make a really enjoyable and fast paced film from it if it was.

I thought Loki could have worked on the big screen. Possibly as two films. Haven't yet managed to see Hawkeye.

I know, but like I said it wound down (fitfully, with, admittedly, some failed spin-off projects) after the Shadow War and liberation of Earth. With a few good trilogies of books to tie off loose ends. What it didn't do was try to go even bigger once it had done its big thing. Martin

Personally I'm thrilled to see the MCU move on. I'd much rather see Nadia Van Dyne and Riri Williams introduced than more time with Bucky.
And the "big arc" ended in an unwatchable mess, so looking forward to anything the Russos touched being eventually retconned into oblivion.

And she patted me on the head and she said, "It's not real, pet. It's just acting." That's when I knew. If they can teach those monkeys to act that brilliantly, just imagine what I could bring to the world.
