You are 100% correct.
I liked the POTP 'decoy suits' and the Core Iguanus and Bomb-burst and the Legacy Metalhawm, but I do want proper Pretenders (shell and all). I'd even go Haslab on it if that is the only way.

I wasn't going to get Skullgrin but I got him cheap for £12 or something in one of those sales. When he arrived I realised I couldn't be bothered to open him, so he's in a box somewhere.

I still feel the best way to realize modern pretenders is combine the decoy suits with head/titanmasters.

That would certainly be the best way to do it. And I think it could be a really fun play pattern. The only problem is that Pretenders weren't Head/Titanmasters back in G1, so it's not going to happen.

They also weren't monsters that transformed into vehicles (legacy) or had the completely wrong identities of the thirteen primes who now transform into boxes for some reason (potp)

That's better, the Primeshells were skewing things slightly.
The large majority of the other updates are shell turns into vehicle.
Bludgeon has two odd inner robot/vehicle versions, both of which could effectively be name only.
Metalhawk has a couple of decent inner robot/vehicle versions, but his original inner robot does have a distinctive feature
Skullgrin's remakes both follow Pretender head on robot body. Legacy has more hints to the shell than Generations
Bludgeon lead the way with the number of versions. It's a bit surprising there aren't more Thunderwings who could be said to be due another go.
And I still can't get over how good that Iguanus is!

Surprising myself by how tempted I am by this new Bludgeon. Would have expected to be much more up for Tarn given my love for (especially the early part of) MTMTE, but I've not been tempted by him at all.
RID 15 remains my favourite for now, and has a much more coherent vehicle mode. The new one does look like it will be lovely for action poses though.

The Cyberverse one-step changer version fullfills my Bludgeon needs, I think, though the RID Warrior remains on my wish list.

Very pleased with Blitzwing. Yes, the jet is naff and the tank needlessly Sunbow, but those alt modes are chunky and filled out. But the robot, that's just magnificent. For a retail figure it has real heft, I suppose that's the leader value hidden in a voyager height figure. He's like Jhiaxus in that there's no hollow parts, everything is carefully enclosed - I really like the way the panels on his forearms fold round to cover the recess where his hands come from. Similarly, the legs are really solid given they're just the wings folded into a square. Above all though, he just looks like Blitzwing. I've had Blitzwing out and about over the last few weeks, and thought back to Pinwig's glowing report of the figure that stirred me to buy him. Blitzwing is a truly tremendous Transformers toy. Such heft and solidness. Beefy bulk. Such beautiful sculpting, all over. One doesn't notice the silly faux cockpit much anymore. And the alt modes are great big fun. As Pinwig said: the leader price in a voyager sized toy leads to nice things. I think Legacy Blitzwing is one of the most successful G1 updates we've ever had. Masterpiece-esque. "He just looks like Blitzwing."

And I still can't get over how good that Iguanus is! As more time passes, with more pretenders being all over the place in terms of size, the more I wish they had swapped Iguanus and TFP Arcee. The only thing he's lacking is size, and the smaller size would have been something different from the superior original toys, for her.

The chat image with that is interesting. So Hasbro were up for another animated series and Netflix turned them down. Fishtank Straxus would have been the chief bad guy. Hmm.

If it was done by the people who made the "WfC" series, then this is a mercy killing.

Very much so. But I'd have loved to have seen a toy of Anna Malkova's original concept because it's so cool (it's in the actual article linked there - I'd embed her original tweet here, but naturally that doesn't work any more). I just love the idea of the head in the fish tank in the chest just there. It preserves the original Marvel UK idea, whilst also turning it into something new. Obviously still comes second to anything everyone's favourite bauble did in the Daily Straxus, but still a nifty concept all the same.
