I can't seem to find a thread for this new release, but admins please move if I'm wrong. renegadegamestudios.com/transformers-deck-building-game/I bought this today and have had a full read of the twenty-page rulebook. It seems to be one of those games where there's a lot to take in but is quite straightforward once you get to grips with it. I like the idea of being able to play competitively or cooperatively, and the two versions would bring their own strategic approaches. Also of great appeal, as my fiancee isn't into Transformers, is that it can also be played solo, so it looks like I'll be playing with myself soon.

Hmmmmmmm, interesting. Not heard of this. We're a boardgame playing family. Firstly- my fiancee isn't into Transformers... Yeah, welcome to the party, pal. Secondly- What's a Deck-building game? Thirdly- Is Prowl in it?

It may ease the learning to understand the core mechanism in a deck building game. Unlike games where you build your custom deck prior to play (e.g. Magic The Gathering, Pokémon TCG, Netrunner), you'll typically start with a small fixed deck of 9 to 15 cards and add/remove cards to it during the game. Other popular deck builders are Dominion, Marvel Legendary (and the Legendary Encounters series) and The Quest for El Dorado.
You'll draw from that deck a hand of cards (typically 5-7 cards) and on your turn play those cards for the effects detailed on them.
After playing those cards, they and normally those you chose not to play, go to your discard and you draw back up from your deck to the hand size. If your deck runs out, you shuffle your discard to form your deck and continue drawing.
Typically card effects include getting new cards which go into your discard, contributing towards the game objective, making other cards played that turn more powerful (aka combos), drawing more cards (to be played that turn) or even removing cards from your deck/discard.
Because you're cycling your deck, the ability to add/remove cards from your deck is the key strategy to consider and what makes these games interesting. You want to add cards that make your random hand potential better, either because those cards are strong in themselves or because they combo with other cards, whilst removing those cards which remove your hand potential (e.g. those starting deck cards are going to be some of the weakest in the game). It's all very well having a card that only scores points at the end of the game, but if you have too many you'll end up having no actions on your turn.
Hopefully this will give the rules a bit more context!

It says it can be played with one player. I may have to track this down.

I am very interested in it. We like board games so this might work and it'll be great to force Mrs Shocks to play it.

There's also a GI Joe Deck Building Game just released, which presumably has much the same mechanics.

Same publisher, but they have enough differences beyond the basic draw a hand/play cards/get new cards mechanics to mean if you're getting just one, read the rules/reviews first rather than just going on preferred IP (unless IP is the most important thing to you).

Ugh. That horrendous Figuero redesign. -Ralph You think that's bad, you should see some of the art in Legendary Encounters: Alien. boardgamegeek.com/image/3272825And that ain't even delving into pictures of the actual cast. Poor Sigourney.

Ugh. That horrendous Figuero redesign. -Ralph I love Figueroa's art, but holy crap I hated that weird and ugly quasi-movie style he drifted into in the costa run. And we were stuck with that stupid look for Thundercracker and Optimus to the end.

The designs themselves weren't terrible, as proven when Milne came along, but those nightmare faces...

The designs themselves weren't terrible, as proven when Milne came along, but those nightmare faces... Aye. I can appreciate the intent of what Figueroa was trying to do, but the ability to execute in a comic just wasn't there. The overall body designs, mind you, were very nice, and I liked them a lot. I wanted a larger version of his Prime design, but had to settle for the Legends scale one. And Prime only has that body until the end of exRid. He gets his Evergreen design when Optimus Prime is launched. Although it's hard to tell what's a new design and what's a new artist in that case.

Speaking of the art, it's nice to see the artists credited in the rulebook, including our very own Mr Roche.
