So I got this in from Amazon the other day, and was so excited that I stopped my Babylon 5 rewatch to start seaQuest.
I hadn't seen it since the nineties, so I wasn't sure what to expect, but I remember that kid me absolutely loved it.
And I'm falling for it all over again. It combines everything I love about Star Trek with the ocean. Though it's kinda weird that this near future now happened in the recent past.
It also kinda makes me wish that we had gotten to see Roy Scheider as a Star Trek captain.

Okay so like it's weird when we reach or pass historical events in Star Trek, but it's surreal that the far future of seaQuest happened a few years ago, under Trump.

Started season two, tonight, and it's lost quite a lot.
Season 1 hit that Star Trek mark just perfectly. Thought provoking, optimistic, with plots that were a bit unhinged. The characters were colorful, but believable. And their gimmick was a united world. seaQuest wasn't an american military sub, it was a global sub, meant to help people, and explore.
Now it seems like most of them have been ditched, for characters with zany sci-fi gimmicks.
Of course, I've only seen the first episode so far, and it may even out and go back, but I fear it's a victim to executive medaling. I'm also not fond of the new sets.

Interesting. I loved the SeaQuest pilot but thought S1 went down the toilet quite quickly.
LOVED s2 when I caught it on Saturday afternoons here in the UK
Each to their own.

Okay, so I've gotten further into the season, and some of my worries didn't pan out. It is a bit more action focused, but the overall writing is still batshit.
I don't like the new characters over the ones they replaced, except Dagwood and Piccolo.
And the CG in season 1 aged significantly better.

Season 2 is really testing me. Half the episodes are about telepaths and psychics. Within three or four episodes, they got possessed by two separate gods. Not long before that they found atlantis snd were possessed by an ancient warrior.
Lucas has been turned into a general Spock type, and they are struggling to make Brody and Henderson relevant. I really miss the characters they got rid of. I think Piccolo and Dagwood are the only new characters that bring something they didn't already have. And honestly, I think I only prefer Piccolo to Krieg exclusively because of Michael DeLuise (and I do think the characters could coexist without being redundant)

I've made it to season 3.
It seems they ditched the psychic doctor. She had been one of my least liked characters in anything. So, that's a mark in favor of this season. However, it seems like everything else got worse. I don't know if they'll be possessed by any more gods, but I'm not fond of the war theme.

It picks up a lot just before being cancelled.

Maybe that was for the best. This show could not change seasons without executive meddling crashing into it. I worry to think of what season four may have looked like.

Boy that is a hell of an unfortunate note to end the series on.
I almost ditched it just before it started picking up. I would have liked another season as strong as the last seven or so episodes. It really started feeling a bit more Trekish, again, while having a different tilt. I like Hudson, though in no small part to Michael Ironside's strength at being able to portray a by-the-book and tough as nails career military commander with a certain amount of warmth. I think anyone else, and Hudson would have been a one dimensional horrible character.
But unfortunately, as I said, this series had really bad problems with executive meddling between seasons, so who knows what would actually have happened if season four had been greenlit.
