Queen Elizabeth the 2nd has become the longest ever reigning monarch this evening.
Congratulations, Your Majesty!

See that's because we have fluoride in the water these days. Victoria didn't have these modern benefits.

Wow. Someone who got a job they were never interviewed for and for whom we pay for through no choice held on to that job by virtue of continually not dying each day. Hardly an achievement.

Hardly an achievement. -Ralph I assume she is kept alive by sheer force of will of wanting to deny Charles the throne. When he dies, she can finally pass on. My mum said that Nostradamus said Charles will never be king, so it must be true.

Hardly an achievement. -Ralph While in an ideal world I would do away with monarchies I still think we can give her a dash of respect for the service she has provided this country. Yes, it is a privileged position, yes she was born into it, but she has been of benefit to this country (even purely in economically cynical sense) so I think we can note the occasion and thank the individual (showing her the same personal respect we should do others) despite disagreeing with the position.

If the Monarchy choose to de-couple themselves from constitutional affairs and were self-sufficient with not a penny from the public purse then I would have reapect for them. Otherwise not a jot.

I think the Queen has worked as hard and done as good a job as the country could have asked her to, given the cards life dealt her. Whatever my views on the institution (not strong either way), I have nothing but admiration for her as a professional who takes her responsibilities seriously. And she has always enjoyed popular support, which legitimises her position in my eyes.

I ask myself how many years Charles has had to prepare to be King?

Quite the send off. The lone bag-pipe player slowly marching off out of sight with the sound gradually fading... that was quite touching actually.
