'Black Friday' really makes me cross.
I understand retailers need to promote themselves this time of year, bring in the punters, but 'Black Friday' is a RIDICULOUS term and needs to be end.
Call it something else.

You know it does actually mean something? Black Friday is the point when US stores cross from being in the red to being in the black for the year, thanks to a post Thanksgiving shopping spree.
Of course that depends on having Thanksgiving which, and begging Toph's pardon, WE DON'T COS WE'RE BRITISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's also predicated on having a Jan to December financial year which, again, WE DON'T COS WE'RE BRITISH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So although I'm not against the term as such it can F*** the F*** off back to the US where it belongs and take Trick or Treating with it!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Here endeth the sermon/rant. For now.....

Black Friday in my parts was the Friday before Christmas and basically meant the entire town (or those that were of drinking age or could pass for it) went out on the lash.

I concur. And in an era when retail seems to have endless sales and promotions rather than end of season / post Christmas (which is an end of season I suppose?) it's nothing more than marketing. I guess it was born out of the 2008 financial crash when pre-Christmas sales started and they just got earlier and earlier. At least the furore of those early sales at Tesco etc. only lasted a few years.
