It's a bit on the technical side.
Let me break it down.
Mastodon is a federated social network - what that means in english is you pick a server/instance to sign up to. That is where you are. You can follow anyone on any server that you like they don't have to be on the same server as you are.
On the web interface your home timeline is comprised of posts from the people that you directly follow.
Local timeline is the posts of everyone on the server/instance you are based on so my local timeline is mastodon.art and Phil's is mastodon.world.
Federated is all of the posts on every server/instance that your chosen one has decided to link to. By default they are all linked, but the person who runs the instance can choose to defederate an instance so they can't be seen (i.e. if they are dodgy, promote hate or spammy).
If an instance is defederated or unlinked if you follow anybody on them their posts will still show on your home and you can interact as normal.
You can also move from one instance to another, you just need to create an account there and the moving process is straight forward.
They are big on content warnings and accessibility, much more so than Twitter.

It's a website - there are apps you can use for your phone to then access it an official app and on android Tusky is the one which is recommended. joinmastodon.org/serversSome are currently not accepting new members due to the demand, Spence is on mastodon.scot they are accepting new accounts. |

The worst thing about Mastodon is by christ are some of the longer term users so absolutely up their own arses about people using other social network apps.

Left Twitter many years ago. -Ralph Hive Social is probably an easier ask, it's now picked up a load of traction as most of comics twitter seems to be moving there. Halfway between Twitter and Instagram, but no algorithm fucking with the timeline just posts in order. You can't currently access it via the web it's app only - android is a bit buggy and at first you might not be able to upload images. There is a straightforward easy to follow workaround which will sort that for you. |
