Blu ray/dvd player will not allow 4:3 option on the new tv. The option for this is greyed out on the player menu. Fiddling with tv settings does no good. When trying to watch anything 4:3 on dvd, the picture is squished. Blu rays with 4:3 content play fine. I have wasted hours trying to find a solution! Currently, 99% of my dvd collection is unplayable. -Ralph

I have never had to set an option for output on a player.
BluRays output should be 16:9 (1920x1080) by spec
The TV should be doing the work for the screen format and be set at 4:3 if you're trying to watch a DW DVD
For it to be squished, I assume you mean thinner than it should be?, that suggests the player is 4:3 ing the picture and then the TV is also
FB us a pic of what the output to the TV looks like and tell us what the TV aspect ratio is set at

Connection Method? HDMI?
Tried a different lead?
Tried a different socket on the TV?
Other external devices OK?
Is this the same TV you plugged the Spectrum into?

Ok. In the meantime we can only watch 4:3 dvd's on the little telly in the corner.

Have you considered rotating the big TV to obtain the correct ratio?

That will not work. The images are squashed, not stretched.

What does the picture do if you set the Big TV's aspect ratio to 16:9?

Nothing. Whatever aspect ratio is selected on the TV, DVD's are squished.

Ralph must try rotating himself into.... the fifth dimension!
Is this a brand new TV?

Have you tried a different HDMI socket?
Have you tried a different lead to the same HDMI socket?
Have you tried a different lead to a different HDMI socket?
Is any other device's input similarly affected? (Roku etc?)
Do you have an older DVD player you can try?
Can you change the aspect ratio OK on Feeview channels?
Are the Freeview channels correct aspect ratio?
What TV and model is it? LMK and I'll dig the manual out online and see if there's something that can lock the aspect ratio?

A ring of negative mass matter should resolve this problem.

I have done all these things. The roku and blu rays are unaffected.
The telly is...a black colour one. I dunno.

Anything identifying the make? Should be a panel on the back that tells you, probably near the input sockets

If it's squished on the horizontal that implies the player is outputting a 4:3 signal and the TV is then converting what it believes is a 16:9 signal to 4:3.
So tweaking the aspect settings on the TV to 16:9 should do it.
