So, is it too late to get a decent price copy of this?
Yeah, the art is nice from those two images. Consider me curious about this, as I'm not really a fan of Joe OR shared universes.

Plenty of copies to pre-order from FP online or comic shops on Ebay.

I like the Sunbow designs - but the preview image above reminds me more of Nick Roche's very early Continued Generation 2 artwork from the mid 1990s (which I loved incidentally) - does anyone else get that vibe? I'm lukewarm on the rest of the concept here though and I'm still not sure I understand this "Void Rivals" business. Is that the name of the new comic, or is it another property in the shared universe which is being used as some form of backdoor pilot for the new Transformers comic? If it's the latter - why? I think this is just a 6 issue miniseries setting up the Hasbro shared universe. Mostly basing that on that TF and GIJoe #1s arent out till December, so just long enough to wrap a 6 issue story.

The big question now is how much of the story is going to be in Void Rivals, and how much is going to be in the two Joe titles. If I have to buy four comics each month to keep track of the story I will be distinctly unimpressed.

We don't know if the two Joe titles are ongoing, I am assuming these will likely be limited series before a proper GI Joe series.

We know there's a Real American Hero continuation by Larry Hama in the works but that's likely to be separate from this continuity?

DWJ usually writes self contained stories. His longest was Extremity at ~8-12 issues.

I find myself feeling a little bit of a bemused bystander at the moment. It feels like a lot of TF Fandom already have very strong opinions on this, but I find myself feeling like "all I really know is that a comic is going to exist". The only name whose work I know that is attached to this is Kirkman, but I'm not clear to what degree he has a direct creative role on which book(s) and the degree to which he is effectively in an editorial role. So I don't feel like I can even speculate what the feel, tone or style of the book is going to be. And as they've told us basically nothing about the premise of the book - barring a description that could equally fit the Sunbow cartoon, the Marvel comic, Masterforce, or Victory if you just changed a single proper name...eh, who knows, it literally could be anything at this stage.
I think as far as the Transformers book I'm going to take the strategy I've mentioned elsewhere - let other folk go first and see what the word of mouth is in terms of what it is doing, and what the execution is like. Then I'll make up my mind whether I'm going to pick it up, and whether that will be trade waiting, or the hassle of sourcing single issues online every month. (Not going to bother trying to buy it to read in the flaming wreckage that Amazon have left of Comixology - so the space-neutral option is closed to me.)
I guess it depends on whether it is doing anything unique, or if it is going "old-skool", and how competently it is executed as a monthly comic. But I don't really have any sense of either excitement or annoyance about it. At most it is "a thing that exists" for me at the moment.
I don't care one iota about GI Joe though. I'm not offended that it is going to exist, but I have no interest at all in actually reading it. I've not got enough attachment to GI Joe to care one way or another.
It's weird, I was expecting that I would have some sort of opinion but at the moment it feels like there is just nothing there at all.

So seem to be going IDW with the picking up few characters at a time but says this hasn't been done before. Gijoe stuff could follow on from "acted against the Decepticon attacks", so we could see these in that title?

Maybe because it's popped out of nowhere and you've had no time for anticipation to build? I don't think so. I mean the rumor that Skybound had the license has been doing the rounds for a while now, and I figured that whomever did have it would be making an announcement at some point, so if I was going to be feeling anticipation I'd have expected it to have started to develop some time back. But also my lack of reaction to the Skybound announcement was noticeable by contrast to the sense of my ears metaphorically pricking up at the announcement that a new Macross show/movie/something is in active development at Sunrise. I know about as much about Skybound's Transformers comics as I do about that. But my reaction to the latter is "OoooH. I wonder where they are going to go with this", and to the former "oh". Karl

Perhaps there hasn't been enough time to 'miss' new TF comics. -Ralph Maybe. It has been a few years since I've bought a TF comic (#6 or #8 of the last IDW relaunch as I recall), but yeah. Perhaps that is it. Karl

I want! I wish they hadn't called this the Energon Universe. I'm having trouble dissociating the EU acronym from the European Union. Whereas I just read it as 'the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe' as the logo is similar! -Ralph

Seeing those images, and the realities of a shared universe, have really put me off the new series. Can't explain it, but it just makes me feel a deep sense of meh. Which is not something I was getting from Void Rivals, oddly enough.

I'm much more charitable about it.
The problem with the IDW one was it shoehorned in after the fact, starting it on the ground level would eliminate a lot of the issues people had (if you don't like GI Joe - that's on you, I can't help there).
I think the instinctive apathy/dislike to GI Joe is colouring a few perceptions and I'm not saying that's good or bad. But let's take a wee step back.
If we are doing the whole giant alien shape changing robots on Earth, there is going to be an in universe response from nations, corporations, power blocs and mad billionaires. Marvel we had GB, Triple I and RAAT, but this go round it seems Hasbro (understandably) wants one of their other properties to fill that sort of role by the looks of things.
Eminently sensible decision on their part and probably part of the license deal.
We won't know if it's a good idea or not till we see it in action and can judge for ourselves.
