"Comic book retailers kept the secret." Oh, for crying out loud, no we didn't, we didn't know any more than any other Previews reader! I'm lucky I ordered ONE copy for the shop, and that was because it sounded like it maybe would appeal to one particular customer, but now that will be my own copy. Issue 1 is no longer available to order from Diamond UK, which means I won't be able to get any for my customers that subscribed to IDW's series and would want to buy this one! What a stupid way to launch!
But thanks, Phil, for sharing the news.

Come to think of it, it's not the first time that Skybound have kept secrets. They put out several months' worth of fake solicits to hide the sudden end of The Waking Dead, resulting in Diamond having to cancel all the retailers' orders for non-existent comics. Oh dear, I think I'll have to keep my wits about me when perusing their section of Previews.

I don't like GI Joe. Never have and can't imagine I ever will. I wish they'd keep them away from Transformers comics.
I completely ignored the last IDW relaunch but thought I might get back on board here but it will take some extraordinary word of mouth to make me interested now.

What a stupid way to launch! Sure enough, I'd had a message from one of those customers asking to subscribe and I had to explain the situation, and I contacted the other former IDW subscriber who also immediately asked to subscribe. Fortunately, both have been able to preorder #1 elsewhere.

I'd argue it would have been a good way to launch if Bleeding Cool hadn't broke the news first, because if it had remained silent it generates maximum interest on the launches of Transformers and GI Joe.
But this book is going to work based on the creative team now, something I have said for a while now, the publisher is almost an irrelevance. Kirkman being associated will give it a boost, but it's unclear if he will actually be writing it.

I'm told Kirkman has form for this, though can't verify the story.
However if you're looking to get an existing fanbase on board I'm not sure making the first appearance hard to get is a good way to go about it

"Comic book retailers kept the secret. Several did, mostly larger US retailers as there was a conference call where the news was shared with them. Yes, I've just been shown an email that went out to retailers inviting them to join the call. So retailers that were inclined and/or able to join would have found out. Others that didn't receive or see the email, or for whatever reason didn't want to join, didn't know. The call was held after the deadline for initial orders, so I'd speculate that most retailers taking part were those that had already decided to invest in substantial stock, with few that would have ordered had the true nature been already known. I suspect this is a way - had there not been leaks - to try to draw in readers that wouldn't otherwise pick up a Transformers/GI Joe. How well it would work, I don't know, as a lot of potential customers flick through a new title before choosing to buy. So unless it's wrapped... I'm told Kirkman has form for this, though can't verify the story. Like I said above, with the fake Walking Dead solicitations.

I suspect that's what Kirkman wanted, fans and readers talking about it on day of Void Runners release, especially as SDCC is in a few weeks time, and i suspect is where we will learn a lot more about the plans for TF and Joe comics.
Triggers a second print run of Void Runners, with more spoilery covers that sort of thing. He get's two big massive orders for Void Runners and the potential for maximum interest in TF and Joe from readers outside the fanbase.

Seems to me this has done what it probably intended to - got everyone interested in and talking about a new TF comic using artificial scarcity. I think announcing a new TF comic these days would be met by a lukewarm reaction at best; this has bumped its profile up a bit so more people will acknowledge it.
I think in my case at this point I'm likely to wait for trades anyway, so it's neither here nor there.

Potential, yes, but that'll come down do the content. I do wonder how many non-spoiled readers will react, "ooh, it's a toy book!" and how many, "oh, it's just a toy book." We'll find out in a few days' time!

Had something like RETAILER SURPRISE on the invoice so you didn't know what it was until stock arrived. I'm not against these antics, many comic stories are ruined by the guff in Previews a couple of months before they come out. Kirkman books sold well enough for me that I would have ordered high on this, but I know how annoying it can be, I was there for the Death of Captain America nonsense.

If you want to see what I believe is the spoilerrific 1:100 variant cover it's on a flyer which has hit some comic stores already. Image is in the spoiler tag.

Oh, good. It's the Marvel/Sunbow animation models. Again. Probably giving us an idea of the freshness that we can expect.
Okay, yes, that's probably what the non-TF-fanbase readership will expect, and it'll probably help to sell to those of us who aren't the obvious marks (i.e. me), so I can see why they'd go with classic/Evergreen designs. And at least that's not Optimus on that flyer, which makes a change. (Oh, I see. Jetfire. On the flyer. I see what they did there.) But all the same...

The art is line with what I was told about Skybound's pitch. I didn't get told anything about the story, just that it was a shared universe with Joe from the get go and the art was very much Sunbow flavoured.
I hope it's just the aesthetic and we do see something new...

Yes but hang on, the Sunbow style may seem overfamiliar, but when has it been used in comics? Every reboot IDW did, they used their own style. I can see Hasbro wanting to use a recognisable style to pull in readers. It doesn't mean the stories will be Sunbow-like. one of the reasons I liked Furman's '84 series was because the visuals *were* familiar. I'm definitely up for that. This is also a variant cover and a teaser at that, it may not match the art of the comic itself

I'll have no problem reading good stories with that look.

I like the Sunbow designs - but the preview image above reminds me more of Nick Roche's very early Continued Generation 2 artwork from the mid 1990s (which I loved incidentally) - does anyone else get that vibe? I'm lukewarm on the rest of the concept here though and I'm still not sure I understand this "Void Rivals" business. Is that the name of the new comic, or is it another property in the shared universe which is being used as some form of backdoor pilot for the new Transformers comic? If it's the latter - why?
