I'm surprised we don't have one of these yet. Regular trip to the O2 Arena London tonight to see Maiden. The support act was Lords of Lost, the German Eurovision entry. Much better when they're let off the leash. Now just waiting for the main event. Hope they hurry up. The trains are in a right mess for getting home because of the strike action.

Oh yeah. It's been a slow year for live music here, so I guess it slipped the mind. I've been to two gigs, Kerbdog in Leeds and Devin Townsend in Nottingham. Hope Maiden lived up to the expectations!

It was magic. This tour they're playing a half and half split between tracks from Somewhere in Time and Senjutsu with a few more thrown in. Somewhere in Time is one of my fave Maiden albums so it was a blinding night.
I have friends who went to Nottingham from here for that Devin Townsend concert! Just because.
Had to crawl out of bed today for CONCERT 2, the annual trip to Southampton common for the 80s retro festival. Just been watching Blancmange doing their synth thing. Singer seemed pissed off he was so early on the bill. The line up this year isn't that great, but we've got Go West, Heaven 17, Kim Wilde and Soft Cell later.

Absolutely chucked it down earlier so we stuck it out for Kim Wilde who was tops but bailed before Boomtown Rats and Soft Cell as neither would have been worth the wet. Need a takeaway and dry clothes.

I have lost all sense of time, but I think these are all this year.
1. Weird Al. Wasnt sure what to expect, but the "no hits" show was a blast. Lounge lizard Dare to be Stupid and the extended Alberquerque were definte highlights.
2. Country 2 Country - Probably my favourite year. Zac Brown headlining were the draw but for the first time I really enjoyed all the main stage acts. Old Crow Medicine Show are not a band I imagine listening to at home, but they put on one hell of a show.
3. Bruce Springsteen - 73 years old and doing a 3 hour show on one of the hottest days of the year. The show was great, band were in great form and the setlist was pretty good by this tours standards. 6 new songs for me, though 4 of those were from the new album. Only real disappointment was them not playing Priests and that was not unexpected.
4. Elton John - Showing his age more than Springsteen, but can still put on a show. Personally disappointed that nothing from The Lion King or Songs from the West Coast got played, but the show was very much 70 and 80s based.

I watched Elton live on the telly, does that count?

You could argue that's no different to watching a concert via the screens at the side of the stage. You're just a bit further back than the cheap seats in the arena itself.
Come to think of it, I did see Roger Waters live from Prague in the cinema.

I'll do better next year, promise! Honestly we were so far away it was like looking out the window and watching the TV in the house across the road. On stage, Elton John was so tiny he looked like a brightly decorated ant. I would have gone to see another Springsteen show in the last 6 weeks, but knowing I couldnt afford pit tickets again I really didn't fancy seeing the show from such far distances.

It's one of the reasons I don't like going to big shows. Paying what can be hundreds of pounds when you add in travel and maybe accommodation to watch a small tv from behind peoples heads? Not for me, really. At least at a place like Rock City, you may get a tall bugger stood in front of you, but the crowd will move so much it scarce matters.

Tis a very good point. I do question that now. Tickets, travel and a couple of t-shirts for two meant that Maiden concert was over £300. I have done every Maiden tour for the last twenty years but even I'm now thinking it's too much.

Its the reason I went for one Springsteen show with a pit ticket rather than 2 or even 3 shows with cheap tickets. Even though they'd already started by the time we got on to the pitch we still ended up about 6 or 7 from the front right at the side of the stage with a great view and atmosphere for the whole show.
Sitting at the far end of the stadium or arena is such a hit or miss experience though.
The venus can be a major factor. Despite almost always being far, far, far from the stage I generally enjoy everything at the O2. Probably about being built as an entertainment venue instead of a sports venue.
