I'm expecting a round of Epic announcements any time now, which will be the first 2020 releases. So time for some predictions! Numbers in brackets are issues for title Where there's an obvious one volume gap, I'm predicting that will be filled. So Iron Man (332) v12, 196-214 Annual 8 Amazing Spider-Man (441) v16, 273-288 Graphic Novel 22: Hooky, UK 607-610 Avengers (402) v8, 129-148 GS2-4 but it'll probably be v5 - earliest missing volume - and v25 366+ Bloodties Fantastic Four (416) v19, 321-333 Annual 22 Captain America (454) v14, 333-350, Iron Man 228 WOULD PREFER 10 OR 11 Doctor Strange (183, 81, 90) v2, Strange Tales 147-168, Dr Strange 169-179 Silver Surfer (146) v2, Silver Surfer #1-18; The Fantastic Four Annual #5 Uncanny X-Men (544) v18, 268-276 Annual 14 Punisher (104/18) v1, Amazing Spiderman 129, 134-135, 161-162,174-175, 201-202 and Annual 15, Giant Size Spiderman 4, Marvel Preview 2, Marvel Super Action 1, Captain America 241, Daredevil 182-184, Spectacular Spiderman 81-83 Then for the rest it'll be next in sequence Thor (502) v19, 437+ Hulk (474) v23, 449+ Wolverine (189) v3, 31+ New Mutants (100) v3, 32+ X-Force (129) v3, 20+ Excalibur (125) v4, 42+ X-Factor (149) v2, 10+ Marvel Two-In-One (100) v2, 20+ West Coast Avengers (102) v3, 25+ PMIF 50-125 v4, 108-125 Master of Kung-Fu (125) v3, 54+ Sgt Fury (167*) v2, 20+ Both Daredevil & the Defenders have completed the sequence at the expected tops of their runs so I expect Defenders to go to v1 - the first 5 volumes are yet to be released, and Daredevil to be something in the v 15-17 gap Daredevil (380) v?15, 283+ - v?17, ??-318 Defenders (152) v1, 1+ FINALLY the following titles frequently have early and later volumes, these are their expected next earliest IRON MAN (332) v4, 25+ THOR (502) v6, 195+ AMAZING SPIDER-MAN (441) v5, 68+ AVENGERS (402) v5, 77+ FANTASTIC FOUR (416) v5, 68+ CAPTAIN AMERICA (454) v5, 160+ Daredevil (380) v5, 83(?)+ Hulk (474) v5, 138+ Uncanny X-Men (544)v 6, 111+ (probably 111-128, annual 3)

Been reading Captain America Epic Collection v15 The Bloodstone Hunt (Cap 351-371). I'd read some Cap up to this point, the whole John Walker is Captain America/Steve Rogers is The Captain story till 350. Can't remember why I bailed but Taking a look at Mikes I got out of Classic X-Men, Thor and Silver Surfer at about the same time - and into Amazing Spider-Man and GI Joe - so it may have been a money thing. Grunwald's heavy handed stance about Cap & Guns comes through strongly at times. My opinion of him moves about a bit, mainly down in recent years thanks to me seeing the effects of two editorial decisions which cost him very decent writers (Stern & DeMattis on Avengers & Cap respectively) but this is workman like stuff throughout. Nothing really impressive, nothing terrible either. Interesting to see Cap's role with The Avengers and events in that book really influencing this one. Having read that book, and encouraged by my recent Hulk reading that let me read some unread Epics, I'm going to read Captain America Epic Collection v16 Streets of Poison (372-386, Annuals 9-10) which has apparently been on my shelf all but unread since June 2015! Captain America Epic Collection v16 Streets of Poison (372-386, Annuals 9-10) Basically more of the same, but you can see a downward curve in the quality as time goes on. Grunwald's Real World Issue this time is drugs which leads to Cap concluding the Super Soldier Serum is a drug and, by an odd coincidence, gets it pumped from his system to undo something bad that had happened to him! Art's OK, Ron Lim, but he's being inked by someone who's trying to make him look more like Erik Larsen who was doing Spider-Man at the time. 5th unread Epic now read. Read Captain America Epic Collection v17 The Superia Stratagem (Cap 387-397, Adventures of Captain America 1-4) Alas the downward curve on Grunwald's writing continues. 443 is his last issue, a while to go yet. I've got a lot of time for Grunwald as an editor - the departure of DeMattis from Cap and Stern from Avengers aside - but his writing is a struggle the further on it gets. The Superia Stratagem itself is a 50s B-Movie plot so outdated I'd be tempted to say Grunwald had some issues. Really didn't work for me. So that's another read tick. Going to have a go at that run of 4 later Daredevil Epics now.

While Cap is on my mind.... There was some bad news tucked away in that Cap announcement yesterday. I also missed it when I did the table of Epics earlier..... Updated later Captain America Epic Contents table EPIC | ISSUES | ANNUAL | EXTRAS & NOTES | 17 The Superior Stratagem | 387-397 | | Adventures Of Captain America 1-4 | 18 | | | | 19 | | | | 20 | | | | 21 | | | | 22 Man Without a Country | 444–454 | - | Ashcan Edition Thor #496 Iron Man #326 Avengers #396 Captain America: The Legend Material from Captain America Collectors' Preview |
398-443 is not a lot to split between 4 volumes. Then I realised 398-401 are Cap's Operation Galactic Storm issues..... Like Iron Man Epic 16 War Games (258-277), Cap Epic 17 stops just before his Galactic Storm issues. They're going to reprint the entire Avengers Galactic Storm volume for Cap aren't they? And probably for several other Epics too Lets say for an argument that v18 is Operation Galactic Storm. It's not going to be *exactly* the same as the Avengers volume 22 Operation: Galactic Storm (Avengers #345–347; Avengers West Coast #80–82; Quasar #32–34; Wonder Man #7–9; Iron Man #278–279; Thor #445–446; Captain America #401 And material from: Captain America #398–400) For a start Cap 398-400 will have their backup stories, so something will need bumping to make room for them. 401 is an epilogure that could easily go into the next volume, but I suspect the Wonder Man issues, whichhardly feature Cap, will get dropped cos they're by the now toxic Gerard Jones marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Wonder_Man_Vol_1_7marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Wonder_Man_Vol_1_8marvel.fandom.com/wiki/Wonder_Man_Vol_1_9So that leaves 402-443, Annuals 11, 12 & 13 to be split between 3 volumes. Effectively 47 issues www.mikesamazingworld.com/mikes/features/series.php?seriesid=3983&page=gallery425 is 31 pages, not quite double sized. Call it 48 425-430 are a storyline called Fighting Chance: that probably wants to be in the same volume. Publshed the same month as 400 is the Captain America Movie Special. Double Sized, 50 That looks about 2 1/2 volumes to my eye. Annual 11 is Citizen Kang and it's part 1 so it could be all of that gets printed. Citizen Kang Part 1: Captain America Annual 11 Part 2: Thor Annual 17 Part 3: FF Annual 25 Part 4: Avengers Annual 21 Call those 3 more annuals another 6 double sized issues, and out count goes to 56. Annuals 12 & 13 are post crossover annuals. Cap 440 & 441 are part of Taking A.I.M.: Avengers 386 Captain America 440 Avengers 387 Captain America 441 Avengers 388 3 more issues, 59. Throw in the issue 401 carried forward from Operation Galactic storm and we have 3 volumes of 20 issues. Have I missed anything? The Crossing doesn't involve Cap's solo book. First Sign is issue 449 in v22 Man Without a Country So something like: EPIC | ISSUES | ANNUAL | EXTRAS & NOTES | 9 Dawn's Early Light | 247-266 | 5 | | 10 | 267-283 | 6 | Defenders 106 | 11 | 284-301 | 7 | 290-301 in Death of the Red Skull TPB | 12 Society of Serpents | 302-317 | | Marvel Fanfare #18 | 13 Justice is Served | 318-332 | 8 | Amazing Spider-Man #278 Material from: Marvel Fanfare #29, 31-32 | 14 | 333-350 | | Iron Man 228 332-350 & IM 228 in The Captain TPB | 15 The Bloodstone Hunt | 351-371 | | | 16 Streets of Poison | 372-386 | 9-10 | | 17 The Superior Stratagem | 387-397 | | Adventures Of Captain America 1-4 | 18 | 398-400 | | Avengers 345–347 Avengers West Coast 80–82 Quasar #32–34 Iron Man #278–279 Thor #445–446 PROBABLY NOT Wonder Man #7–9 | 19 | 401-410 | 11 | Captain America Movie Special Thor Annual 17 FF Annual 25 Avengers Annual 21 | 20 | 411-424 | 12-13 | | 21 | 425-443 | | Avengers 386-388 | 22 Man Without a Country | 444–454 | - | Ashcan Edition Thor #496 Iron Man #326 Avengers #396 Captain America: The Legend Material from Captain America Collectors' Preview |
20 looks a little light, 21 a little heavy but between 424 and 425 is the obvious split so Fighting Chance is in one book. The break between 19 and 20 falls nicely for the storyline too just on the numbers.

Oh Dear.

Amazing Spider-Man, Vol. 5: Secret of the Petrified TabletThor, Vol. 5: Into the Dark NebulaExcalibur, Vol. 4Punisher, Vol. 4Captain America, Vol. 18Wolverine, Vol. 6Fantastic Four, Vol. 5: By Ben BetrayedIron Man, Vol. 17Black Widow Epic Collection: Beware the Black WidowBlack Widow Epic Collection: The Coldest War It's an interesting list this! It has a resemblance to last year's first quarter: Excalibur, Punisher, Wolverine, newer Captain America & newer Iron Man volumes in about the right place. Thor missed an older volume this year, so one early in the new year is good, and ASM & FF had their older and newer volumes very close together in the schedule so moving them apart is a good idea. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a Hulk volume - 23 - in between what we know and what was revealed here, but that might also have been bumped up the year to distance itself from the older Hulk volume later in the year. No Conan, No Star Wars. Of those there was only Conan in that time span this year. Moon Knight, Black Panther & Ms Marvel are the other three Epics in a similar time frame this year to miss out. All three are presumed concluded, though I could perhaps see Moon Knight returning with Fist of Khonshu & Marc Spector: Moon Knight reprints. Captain America and Iron Man volumes with near identical contents concerns me. That's IF I've guessed the contents right. Iron Man doesn't have the final volume Cap does but in both cases I'm hitting a multiple of 20 standard issues per volume dead on including the Operation Galactic Storm issues and I know the Cap must be right to fit the gap. As I said above, I suspect the Black Widow volumes is because a movie is coming. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Widow_(upcoming_film) Two consecutive or one for the theatre release, one for home video? PLENTY of material to go in these, see above!

In order to work out which Marvel Comics Present stories are likely to be reprinted in Wolverine Epics, here's a nice big list. Weapon-X is surely a given? But which others? The David/Kieth Cyber story, given it's significance later? The table shows the Issues the story ran, Story - using a trade title where known, or a description of the team up, the writer/artist and the issue of Wolverine published when this issue of MCP was on the stands For completeness sake I've included the lead mutant stories for the months Wolverine was absent early on Since up to Wolverine 30 has already been Epic'd with no MCP after the first ten issues, I'd suggest anything prior to MCP 62 is unlikely to get Epic'd MCP | STORY | CREATIVE TEAM | CONTEMPORARY | 01-10 | Save The Tiger | Claremont/Buscema | UXM 234 | 10-17 | Colossus: God's Country | Nocenti/Leonardi | Wolverine 3 | 17-24 | Cyclops: Retribution | Harras/Lim | Wolverine 6 | 24-31 | Havok: Pharoah's Legacy | Mackie/Buckler | Wolverine 9 | 31-38 | Excalibur | Higgins/Larsen | Wolverine 14 | 38-47 | Wolverine | Wolfman/Buscema | Wolverine 19 | 48-50 | Wolverine & Spider-Man | Larsen | Wolverine 23 | 51-53 | Wolverine vs Wildchild | Liefield | Wolverine 25 | 54-61 | Wolverine & Hulk | Higgins/Ross | Wolverine 27 | 62-63 | Wolverine | Zimmerman/Ryan | Wolverine 33 | 64-71 | Wolverine/Ghost Rider | Mackie/Texeira | Wolverine 34 | 72-84 | Weapon-X | Windsor-Smith | Wolverine 37 | 85-92 | Wolverine Blood Hungry - Cyber | David/Kieth | Wolverine 46 | 93-98 | Wolverine | Truman/Foxx | Wolverine 50 | 99 | Wolverine: Hauntings | Liefield/Mackie/Valentino | Wolverine 53 | 100 | Wolverine/Ghost Rider: Dreams of Doom | Mackie/Kieth | Wolverine 53 | 101-108 | Wolverine/Nightcrawler | Lobdell/Colan | Wolverine 54 | 109-116 | Wolverine/Typhoid Mary: Typhoid's Kiss | Nocenti/Lightle | Wolverine 58 | 117-122 | Wolverine/Venom | Mackie/Kieth | Wolverine 64 | 123-128 | Wolverine | Lobdell/Jensen | Wolverine 67 | 129-130 | Wolverine | Slott/Jensen | Wolverine 69 | 131 | Wolverine | Felder/Jensen | Wolverine 70 | 132-136 | Wolverine | Slott/Lightle | Wolverine 71 | 137-141 | Wolverine | Larsen/Marrinan | Wolverine 73 | 142 | Wolverine | Marrinan | Wolverine 75 | 150-151 | Wolverine/Daredevil/Vengeance | Nocenti/Harper | Wolverine 79 | 152 | Wolverine | Zimmerman/Yomotov/Ryan | Wolverine 80 | 153-155 | Wolverine | Yomotov/Felix | Wolverine 81 |

The last earlier Cap Epic was v4 Hero or Hoax? collecting Captain America #139–159 released July 11, 2018. However looks at the Cap Masterwoks, more expensive hardcovers which Marvel appear to be trying to protect the sales of by not releasing Epics in the same period: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel_MasterworksMMW | Cap Issues | Date | 7 | 149-159 | March 2014 | 8 | 160-175 | April 2016 | 9 | 176-192 | April 2017 | 10 | 193-200, Annual 3 | July 2018 | 11 | 201-214, Annual 4 | July 2019 |
So the two most recently released Cap Masterworks cover the material which should be in the next early Cap epic - Jack Kirby's return. When will the Masterworks be judged to be out long enough to allow an Epic release of the same material?

Trying to read Daredevil Epic 18 Fall From Grace. Finding it hard going. The way most of the Fall From Grace story issues don't follow directly on from the previous one and start mid fight with someone new is very off putting and I'm not sure the art is doing it for me. Or the Prince of Chichester's writing.
The aim was to read all four later DD volumes on the bounce and it's not started well. Right now I'm yearning for the spare cash to buy the new FF volume digitally.

I quite enjoy the mad energy of Fall From Grace and Tree of Knowledge, but it's an acquired taste. The following volume is a slog tbh, the Elektra mini in it is just awful. I'm looking forward to reading the Kesel run (in how many parsecs? haha sorry) and the "final" volume containing the Kelly and Lobdell runs is quite fun.

At a guess Epic 5 looks something like 160-182
Epic 6 183-201, Annual 3, Bicentennial Battles
Epic 7 202-223, Annual 4
Epic 8 224-246, Hulk 232 (crosses over with Cap 230) The Cap fans amongst us will tell me which important Cap stories I've broken. Of the trades covering this material Secret Empire 169-176 Nomad 177-186 Madbomb 193-200 Bicentennial Battles 201-206 So closing v5 on 186 and v6 on 200 might be better storywis but makes 5 a bit too long and 6 a bit too short - have the page counts for these issues and aiming for c450 per volume.

I guess with the way comics were written back then, breaking up what is now considered an arc isn't quite the same as doing it these days. Perhaps it depends more on how the individual issues circa 180-182 end. I'm pretty sure there are dangling plot threads from the start of Englehart's run at the end of v4, for example, but nothing you'd consider mid-story.

Highest numbered Spider-Man Epic, joint highest numbered Epic with FF25. FF25 closed their pre Onslaught run, Spider-Man has power to add. I *think* this might be the first Epic to be publishing material used in Panini's Spider-Man. Would need to check. The number of ASM issues in this volume demonstrates the trouble doing Epics around this point with lots of stories overlapping multiple titles. I certainly don't want to be making predictions north of here as we go into Clone saga teritory but I suspect the Clone Saga and Ben Reily complete epics might be a reasonable guide. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marvel_Ultimate_Collection,_Complete_Epic_and_Epic_Collection_lines#Complete_Epics ASM runs to issue 441 so with that mess I could see another 10-15 Epics easily. www.mikesamazingworld.com/mikes/features/series.php?seriesid=3985&page=galleryIt wasn't top of my wants list for ASM - a volume to fill the gap in the 270s/280s is, but with lots of Carmage stuff on the runway for Jan I can see why they've gone for it.

From the ridiculous New Mutants Epic Collection: Curse of the Valkyries in paper form is in the post to me. MARTIN: I think you need this as it contains a lot of uncollected New Mutants from Inferno onwards. Ugh. I have for a long time said that people who slag Rob Liefield off need to read the New Mutants issues before he took charge. I just have and they're dreadful! www.mikesamazingworld.com/mikes/features/series.php?seriesid=4050&page=galleryI'm not that keen on Brett Blevins art anyway but reading this volume makes it clear how much it varies according to inker. Al Williamson is good, Blevins himself, but apart from that..... The inker is rotating anyway but as the book goes on the penciller changes every issue too. One of best looking issues out the whole volume is 75, which pencilled by Byrne but even then it doesn't look up to his usual standard. The inker is Bob McLeod who I have plenty of time for usually (Hercules in TF UK) but together it's not a match made in heaven. The other decent looking issue is 78, drawn by Rick Leonardi, who's someone whose art I've grown to like a lot over the years but again something's not quite right here. Williamson inking again, another artist I like so again maybe not an ideal match. 81 is a deadline doom fill in that's been in the drawer since Claremont was writer 2+ years back so we'll sort of excuse that, and it's after 83 the artist merry go round really starts: 83 is the last Blevins/Williamson, 84 is Terry Shoemaker with our old friend Al Milgrom inking and 85 is Geof Isherwood with former penciller Bret Blevins inking! I'm not sure the art is the worst problem here, the story is more the issue. Having had a recent re-read the contrast between Claremont & Louise Simonson is stark and, despite her success elsewhere with X-Factor and Power Pack, I don't think she was a great match for the title anyway. Her X-Factor work also gets a little stale around the time this book is out with the Celestials storyline I've ranted about upthread. We start off with the 3 issues of New Mutants involved with Inferno (71-73) and the four issues of X-Terminators that tie into the same events. No problems there. The three issue aftermath (74-76) separating the kids from Magneto and allying them with X-Factor, bringing in the four older X-Terminators, no problem. 77 & 78 kick something off with Mirage's Valkyrie powers and those first two issues are ok but when they end up in Asgard (80) it all goes to pieces. And the Asgard story goes on and on. It's still running at the end of the book (85) and isn't resolved in the next issue (86). While this extended storyline is going on we keep getting a page or so of the two New Mutants left behind in issue 78 and to be honest I find their story more interesting that the attempt to do an exciting adventure in Asgard. 10 months is a long time to keep a story going: Back in the day I lost interest early on and stopped buying the title for the only time in it's run. I came back on board for issue 87 which I also re-read last night and was like a breath of fresh air! But the worst thing is that right through the Asgard story you know how it's going to end! The same month New Mutants 80 came out New Mutants Annual 5 comes out showing the New Mutants shortly after their return to Earth. Right through the following story you're waiting for them to get there and it just doesn't happen until c issue 88. VERY poor planning. I've got New Mutants Annual 5 *somewhere* in the long boxes, must dig it out. It's got Liefield's first work on the title in it too which was I think what got him the regular gig. At the time it was also not helped that another X-Book, Excalibur, is also playing out another prolonged "heroes away from their usual setting" story in The Cross Time Caper - see posts upthread - and during it Claremont kicks off a story where he scatters the X-Men to the four winds. Possibly editorial should have seen the similarities and intervened.... but this is shortly after Bob Harras ascended to the X-Throne. So yeah. First time reading some of the latter issues in this book and they didn't jell with me at all. It's not good stuff. Liefield issues on the iPad to read next as a comparison. Read 86 already and it's so much better than this. to the sublime: New Mutants Epic 2 Demon Bear is out in comic shops today containing all the Bill Sienkiewicz draw issues - he later inks 35-38. If v6 Curse of the Valkyries is the worst New Mutants volume then this is the best. Well worth a read. I already have the issues in Classics and, before that, the issues themselves, so I'll be holding out for a good price on this volume before buying. But you do need a copy! (rather fond of the Sal issues at the start which introduce Magik and the Hellions too)

Punisher Epic Collection v4: Jigsaw Puzzlewww.hachettebookgroup.biz/titles/marvel-comics/punisher-epic-collection-jigsaw-puzzle/9781302922757/Jigsaw Puzzle is the title of Punisher 35 www.mikesamazingworld.com/mikes/features/comic.php?comicid=50153It's also the name of a six part storyline that runs 35-40 That ties in with the info from upthread: Punisher, Vol. 4Previous volume finished Punisher 25, so this will start 26.
Will include Annual 3, Lifeform, which continues in Daredevil Annual 6, Hulk Annual 16 & Silver Surfer Annual 3. So I think this looks like 26-40, Annual 3 and one of the Graphic Novels about to be re-released in a compilation: Return to Big Nothing HC www.mikesamazingworld.com/mikes/features/comic.php?comicid=65669 released same month as Punisher 24
SC www.mikesamazingworld.com/mikes/features/comic.php?comicid=65674 released same month as Punisher Intruder SC www.mikesamazingworld.com/mikes/features/comic.php?comicid=65693 released same month as Punisher 26) Return to Big Nothing is the bigger draw, Grant/Zeck who did the acclaimed Punisher limited series, but that was released as an Epic (imprint) Graphic Novel whereas Intruder wasn't Excalibur Epic Collection v4: Curiouser and Curiouserwww.hachettebookgroup.biz/titles/marvel-comics/excalibur-epic-collection-curiouser-and-curiouser/9781302922764/Curiouser and Curiouser is the title for Excalibur 54 www.mikesamazingworld.com/mikes/features/comic.php?comicid=62037That ties in with the info from upthread: Excalibur, Vol. 4ALAN DAVIS V1! rough guess is 42-60ish, XX Crossing Amazing Spider-Man Epic Collection v5: The Secret of the Petrified Tabletwww.hachettebookgroup.biz/titles/marvel-comics/amazing-spider-man-epic-collection-the-secret-of-the-petrified-tablet/9781302921965/We already had this title upthread: Amazing Spider-Man, Vol. 5: Secret of the Petrified TabletTitle is ASM 74
Previous volume, 4, ended 67. Vol. 7 is out (105-123), so 5's contents will tell us what's in Vol. 6
Into 20 page issues.
Annuals 6 -8 are reprints.
68-104 (37 issues) and Spider-Man story from Marvel Super-Heroes #14 between two volumes.
I think this looks something like 68-84 + Spider-Man story from Marvel Super-Heroes #14
