Big one this: Doctor Strange 2 regularly came near the top of people's Most Wanted Epics list with Amazing Spider-Man 16, X-Men 18, Silver Surfer 2 & Iron Man 12. It fills a one volume gap giving Doctor Strange a starting run of 1-5, which is also his largest run so far.

As the numbers suggest Strange Tales becomes Doctor Strange with issue 169, continuing to issue 183.

However later in the 1970s strange tales resumes with it's original numbering from 169 continuing to 188!

Epics 6 & 7 will complete the 70s/80s Doctor Strange and gather his Strange Tales Appearances: 52-73 in Epic 6 and 74-81, Into Shamballa and Strange Tales in Epic 7 I suspect

March 2022's Doctor Strange Marvel Masterworks, volume 10, collected Doctor Strange #58-73 prhcomics.com/book/?isbn=9781302933203 so the next Masterworks, probably in 2024, takes the Epic 6 material off the board for early 2025.

Epic 12 is now a 1 volume gap:

Doctor Strange Sorcerer Supreme 62-75 & Annual 4 and, probably given it's in the Third Sorcerer Supreme Omnibus and the Epic is a bit short at the moment, Midnight Sons Unlimited 6

About 19 1/2 issues worth when the Unlimited, which is 2 1/2 issues worth, is included.

The MMW clash means the next Doctor Strange Epic is a straight choice between 7 and 12. Place Bets Now!

I'm only expecting one Doctor Strange Epic in 2024 as, until recently, it's essentially been a 1 book per year Epic Title:

Oh, another one I'd forgotten was coming! I'm in for this one. Skipped volume 1 as it's the same contents as the Omnibus if I remember correctly.

I think I'm probably up for the first 9, maybe 10, volumes of this. I got Afterlife and the Ellis run in there put a bad taste in my mouth as his comics often do (even setting aside his, er, problematic behaviour) and it's high in my to-sell pile.

Is there likely to be anything good post-Infinity War?

It was that big I had to take it out of here and put it on a separate page! It took the Clone Saga/Ben Reilly Complete Epics ELEVEN Epic ish size books to collect the whole thing and the first Epic Collection is into the material in the second Complete Epic: I can't see Epics doing it in less than NINE.

The major omission in Amazing Spider-Man Epic 27 The Clone Saga from Spider-Man: The Clone Saga Complete Saga 1 & 2 is Spider-Man: The Lost Years #1–3 - Epics generally tend to collect in rough publication order so that's likely to be collected in a future ASM Epic, probably 29 or 30, alongside some or all of ASM 403-405 which were published the same months as the Lost Years.

Beyond the Nine ish Epics for the Clone Saga we're probably looking at one more to cover the material up to Identity Crisis and then another for Identity Crisis through to The Gathering & The Final Chapter. So 2, possibly three post Clone Saga depending what else goes in and where the breaks fall.

So although there's only 6 more Epics still to be published prior to the Clone Saga we may well be buying ASM Epics for a good few years yet!

The one volume gap there is the notorious Epic 16: Amazing Spider-Man 273-288, Spectacular Spider-Man 111 (which follows on from ASM 273) & Marvel Graphic Novel 22: Hooky.

ASM 273 feeds into Peter Parker Spectacular Spider-Man 111 so that's probably in there too. ASM 279 is part of the Missing In Action crossover with Spectacular 117 and Web Of 16-18. That could well make a contribution to ASM Epic 16 but I see it more as Web Of's event. Unfortunately the mapping I have for Web Of makes it a little difficult to fit in the ASM & Spectacular issues at that stage.

I'm guessing no more Clone Saga epics are currently scheduled for 2024? I would have thought this is the kind of story to keep some momentum on, get two or three out a year.

I know they didn't do a great job on Harras's Gatherers saga in Avengers in that regard, but the Clone Saga is much more high-profile.

Or is it the same reason and they've kind of tripped themselves up by having Omnibuses of the same material out at the same time?

The word *FINALLY* gets used a lot in my intros for these Epics but this one .... A FIVE AND A HALF YEAR WAIT BETWEEN VOLUMES ON THIS TITLE!

Still some way short of Ant Man/Giant Man's SEVEN AND A HALF YEARS BETWEEN VOLUMES though!

Epic 1 Cry Monster was released to comic shops on August 8, 2018 (book shops followe 13 days later)and contained Marvel Feature #11–12; Marvel Two-In-One #1–19; Marvel Team-Up #47 covering 1973-1976. 520 pages long.

It's worth looking at the Marvel Masterworks briefly at this point

At the point MTIO Epic 1 was released the material in it's later half, in MMW 2, had been printed less than 11 months ago. That's quite short a gap for material being used by both MMW and Epics. This is probably due to the Epic effectively promoting the Marvel Two-In-One Thing & Human Torch title in progress at the time and to pave the way for the imminent return of the Fantastic Four Title. The then current MTIO title also probably explains the very short gap between MMW 2 & 3 - just 6 months.

The material for Epic 2 was complete in Masterworks by the end of August 2019. Allowing the usual 18 month gaps between MMW and Epics meant the earliest we should have seen Epic 2 no earlier than Feb 2021.

Why not do a later volume? Well with the exception of Project Pegasus (MTIO 53-58) and the Serpent Crown Affair (64-67), likely to bookend Epic 4, very little of MTIO has been reprinted so I could see them waiting for MTIO to restore the material first. The material for the aforementioned Epic 4 that was fit to use wouldn't have been that far away for the Masterworks so I could see why they decided to wait for Epic 2.

Except Epic 2 didn't show up when we expected it to. In November that year I pulled the full cover, front & back, for Epic 2 out of the now defunct Hachette Database www.facebook.com/3092380644372559/ while trying to find something else www.facebook.com/3092180131059277/?comment_id=3092195807724376&reply_comment_id=3092298804380743 It was the first cover I ever found using the ISBN and set me on the path to using them as a look up for more info.

The ISBN placed it amongst the Epics for late 2021/early 2022:

We thought issue 29 with Shang-Chi, Master of Kung Fu, may have become a problem following the suspension of his Epic Line, but the difficulty appears once again with issue 21 featuring Doc Savage. The Essentials had to leave this out due to licensing issues but the Masterworks included it in MMW MTIO v3. Likewise MMW for Marvel Team Up reprint Doc Savage's appearnce in Giant Size Spider-Man 3, so we had good reason to believe the problem reprinting his crossover appearances was resolved. That does not appear to be the case now :-(

So I'm sad to see MTIO 21 left out but understand why. Fortunately I own a copy, the third oldest Marvel comic I own the actual issue of after Avengers 145 & 146, which were omitted from the old Avengers Serpent Crown trade. I probably should track down a copy of GS Spider-Man 3 now.....

The two annuals plus MTIO 20 form a single story. Wilson was evidentally drawing from some decent reference material but placing all the objects on the US sides of the road!

Epic 1: Cry Monster: Marvel Feature #11–12; Marvel Two-In-One #1–19 & Marvel Team-Up #47

Epic 2: Two Against Hydra: Marvel Two-In-One #20, #22-36, Annual #1; Fantastic Four Annual #11

Epic 2 is a short book. 20 x 17 page issues (16 standard issues, 2 double sized annuals), 376 pages. By contrast Avengers Epic 9, in a very similar time span, is 24 x 17 page issues (18 standard issues, 3 double sized annuals), 440 pages.

Even with the missing rights locked issue 21 Epic 2 would only 21 issues worth so I think the message here is go shorter than we usually would on the remaining 17 page issue volumes, which actually works REALLY well in terms of stories and the overall picture....

So here's my predictions to how the remaining 4 volumes will be laid out:

Epic 3: 37-52, Annual 2-3, Avengers Annual 7 (22 x 17 page issues worth)

Epic 4: 53-68, Annual 4-5 (20 x mainly 17 page issues worth)

* 53-58 are Project Pegasus and can't be split. Position Annual 4, same month as issue 5 either before or after this.

* 61-63 is the story with Her, Moondragon & Starhawk and can't be split

* 64-67 are the Serpent Crown Affair

Epic 5: 69-85, Annual 6 (20 x 22 page issues worth)

* 83 & 84 are an Alpha Flight 2 parter.

* 75 is double sized

Epic 6: 86-100, Annual 7 (18 x 22 page issues worth, see below for options to bring that to 20 issues)

The book is 2 issues short on the MTIO issues. I can see two options to make this up:

EITHER

* Contest of Champions 1-3, same months as MTIO 88-90

OR

* Marvel Team-Up Annual 5: Spider-Man, The Thing, Scarlet Witch, Doctor Strange & Quasar features Serpent Crown and sequel to 64-67 (same month as MTIO 93) plus Marvel Fanfare 15's That Night?, published a few months after MTIO ended but probably not enough room for accommodating in The Thing Epics.

Contest of Champions came to mind first but I'm liking the second option more as time goes on.

And because I know someone will ask: YES, I think there will be The Thing Epics.

2: Thing 20-36, FF 277 (Thing returns to Earth & leaves FF), 296 (Thing rejoins FF, double sized)

Now you could cut FF277 down to the Thing/Humanm Torch half - it's a split book with the top half of each page featuring Ben, Johnny, Alicia & The Dire Wraiths while the bottom half is Reed, Sue & Dr Strange vs Mephisto. The bottom half has been published separately already. If they did that they could shove an issue up from Epic 1 and include the story from Marvel Fanfare 15 perhaps.

For a period in the late 90s/early 00s I was rabidly buying Dark Horse Star Wars so I know I've probably read a large quantity of the material in here, but I don't recall anything about it. Very little of the prequel comics *really* grabbed me at the time*. I probably still have some of it in the Long Boxes remaining at my Mother's house in London, really should have checked when I was last up there.

* So what Dark Horse Star Wars did I like? Rogue Squadron I adored. Crimson Empire was Fab. And Dark Empire was great. New Republic very much is where it was at for me.

The second half of the Fighting Chance storyline is a mjor contributor to this book and that has had a previous collection in two books:

The Epics have cut the storyline in two right at the same point as those books! Add this to the list of things that Epics might have collected in one book with Micheline's Avengers and Kirby's return to Cap!

I expected Iron Man 314, an epilogue to the events of Fighting Chance, to be in there. This issue is already collected in Iron Man Epic 20 In the Hands of Evil.

Cap already had the longest run of Epics, with 12 books. This stretches that run to 14 by joining the run from Epic 9 to Epic 20 with the previously orphaned Epic 21

Cap's monster run now starts from issue 247, cover dated July 1980 the same month as Amazing Spider-Man 206, Avengers 197, Fantastic Four 220 & Uncanny X-Men 135.

Obviously you couldn't drop 360 pages into Epic 2, and pulling the Red Skull story in 13-19 back into Epic 1 probably isn't an option. The Red Skull story was 200 pages when collected in Red Glare.... I wonder if there's a solution that involves splitting Sentinel of Liberty over Epics 1 & 2?
