Less functional than the original in that it has to dump the rom off the cart before the emulator can run it. Why they did this instead of sticking an FPGA in there I don't know, sure it's probably easier to program an emulator for Linux or whatever's running under the hood of this thing, but I'm pretty sure the 2600 has already been done for the Mister system.
That said, it's very interesting that they've even released a system that plays original carts at all, so gotta give them credit for that.

Big thing about the 2600 in Retro Gamer this month. The last four pages are about this new one.

The backwards compatability with the OG cartridges was what struck me, I wasn't expecting that, saw a review on YT from Dan Wood which is where I learned of it. He slagged off the Pac-Man port, I was amazing at that game back in the day, played that to death.

The original 2600 Pac-Man? I did too, I had that cart. It was vilified though because it wasn't arcade accurate.

I think it's got a lot of heat retrospectively due to Atari's marketing and over manufacturing of the game as opposed to the initial reception.
So many games/clones came out on systems that couldn't handle them but we didn't care back then. Maybe the US was more critical?

Maybe, I know it was basic AF but I had mastered that Pac-Man game, many hours pored into being able to defeat the game. Getting so good you would leave the power pills to be the last thing you ate.

I picked up an issue of Retro Gamer as it was running a feature on the Atari 2600+. Fascinating.

Good man. Still a magazine I sub to. The content maybe pretty much the same every month but I still find it entertaining. Another collection (250+ issues now) that sits in my old bedroom waiting for a permanent home.

I pick it up from time to time depending on the lead feature.
