news.tfw2005.com/2024/02/15/new-guinness-world-record-for-transformers-memorabilia-50426010,568 unique items. I'm pretty sure I have more than that but have never wanted to advertise to thieves! Just since 2020, I've had around 800 toys. My old toy spreadsheet records, which ground to a halt at around 2007, listed over 2000, I think. (One of these days, I'll start on the momentous task of converting the subsequent paper records to digital.) Comics alone would be in the thousands: 332 regular issues of Marvel UK for a start and every issue from the other publishers since, most with multiple covers. As for merchandise, I couldn't even guess at a number! Not to dismiss the guy's collection, of course - it's pretty impressive!

It would be pretty cool if you just casually had the world record. I wonder how many world records are actually held by people who don't know it, or don't want other people to know it.

Guinness World Records aren't the best at researching their facts. Unless you're actively approaching them after finding out that they'll actually acknowledge it as worthwhile they won't really care about finding if anyone else has bettered it.

The fact that the new record holder roughly doubled the previous record seems to suggest there are probably a number of very large collections, quite possibly larger than this record. Until someone comes forward to establish a record, then there is no record and the first "official" memorabilia record could hypothetically be just ten items - which could then be broken numerous times.
Incidentally, I know the previous record holder for Harry Potter memorabila (3600+), whose record was beaten by over 40% (5200+) about two years later. Both women happen to be from South Wales.

You have to pay to get a certified Guinness World Record, it's basically a vanity thing, I'm fairly certain Nick, the Mapes, Paul Hitchens, Andy K to name a few probably all have collections of TF memorabilia in excess of that.
As you say Nigel, what collector wants to advertise where they are and what they have, especially the hardcore ones. Please come and burgle me!

Indeed, Guinness is basically a commercial concern - if you are prepared to pay their rates then their consultants will find a record that you can have, by whatever clever form of words they need to use to frame it. They are effectively a PR company that happens to be founded by a brewery, so it isn't a particularly meaningful thing to have. But hey, if someone wants to spend the money and it makes them feel good about themselves then cool - it isn't doing anyone any harm.
