So, for those who know there has long been issues with exporting the Macross franchise - one of my favourite set of Mecha shows (arguably my overall favourites of the entire genre), and apart from some releases in the early years of DVD pretty much nothing of the several decades long set of shows has been officially released outside of Japan. The legal cluster*%$£ that lay at the heart of that was finally resolved about a year and a half ago and then...everything went quiet and, with the exception of Animego's kickstarter for a BLu-Ray release of Macross II earlier this year, so it remained.
Until today, and an official announcement:-
Disney+ to Stream Nearly All Macross Anime Worldwide in 2024
All of the Macross movies, series, and OAVs available on Disney+ in Japan - and everything except the 1982 Superdimension Fortress Macross and it's movie remake available across the entire world! (The latter two are excluded from the worldwide deal due to Tatsukno having proven to own the overseas distribution rights and leased them to Harmony Gold. Still the fly in the ointment apparently).
Something I never thought was within the realm of possibility nevertheless. I was expecting a low-key Bluray release for Macross Frontier or Delta, and maybe the movies for those series if sales held up. Not a mass launch on a major streaming platform!
And yes, once these drop I will be subbing to Disney+ again for a while - I still need to finish Macross 7, and to see the second Macross Delta movie. :-)
