Nope, the toy is repackaged from the Microchange Cassette robot, which was a 1:1 scale robot that transformed into a 1:1 Scale dictaphone. Like the cassettes and the Microchange cars, the toy that became soundwave was designed to be sized to the actual real item that it transformed into.

The Soundwave in media that transformed into a "boombox" is different to the version that was available as a toy. The version in supporting media turns into a boombox, the toy turns into a dictaphone. So, everyone is right - depending on _which_ Soundwave they are talking about.

I've always thought that if Soundwave can mass shift to become a giant robot then surely he can pause that ability to alter size from a micro cassette dictaphone to a bigger tape deck and then to a boombox, then to a Transformer scaled tape deck and finally a massive giant tape deck the size of a house if he chooses to.

Same for the cassettes. Micro cassette or standard size etc.

Megatron would often be a human scaled gun and a Transformer scaled gun too.

I liked that the toy was a dictaphone. Every kid I knew already had access to a boombox or at least a standard cassette player, but I'd never seen a *micro*cassette before. It looked new and futuristic!

Is that true, or was it more that he was a human scaled gun in the comic (excluding the Movie adaptation) and a TF scaled gun in the cartoon?

Yeah, the toy Soundwave was a micro-cassette player, but Laserbeak was a normal sized cassette in the Ladbybird book 'Laserbeak's Fury' and Ravage a normal sized cassette (labelled 'Cats') in the adventure game book 'Dinobot War'.

Thankfully, I can never remember him becoming another Transformer's gun in Marvel. Which is good, because I hate that idea.

But as we're talking Soundwave - and Robo Capers is canon, then yes, he can certainly become a boombox! This is all the proof we need.
