The open trailer stood on it's end is generally known as Optimus Prime's repair bay.
Ultra Magnus has one too

Section 2 does not exist. -Ralph Yes it does. It is Section 9 that doesn't exist. And Section One that is the important one, it is where the power is. Karl

For one thing, anyone sitting in the little seats will fall straight out. And that's quite a drop. (And yes, I know Dianauts have magnets in their arses to prevent this, but they don't exist in Transformersland).
Glad to hear it irks others too.

Re. G1 Optimus Prime - or any Optimus Prime toy with the original style trailer- does it irk anyone else when you keep seeing the battle station stood up on its front or is it just me? I agree it looks silly. Everything about the trailer headquarters suggests it was designed to lie flat and nothing else, and standing it up on end was invented by the marketing/packaging people afterwards when taking photos of it. How/why would the trailer stand up on end when Optimus gets injured? Why does he need to stand up for his repairs anyway? How does he stand up for repairs if it's his legs that need repairing? Martin

Optimus does not 'stand' in the repair bay. He is held in place by surgical fields while being fixed, before being able to be instantly re-deployed back to the battlefield.

It's like a Borg Alcove.
I like to think Prime can stand behind it and it's folded out heavy armour on the battlefield.

The upended trailer reminds me of the non-TF Jetfire and Shockwave toys that claimed to be triple (or quad) changers by counting a jet or gun with legs as a distinct form.
Does Prime actually have a repair bay in the G1 storyline? The comic makes a point of showing Ratchet’s and Ironhide’s, but the crane in Prime’s looks more like part of the Ark.

A possible standard piece of Autobot battlefield or construction/medical tech, hence why Prime has one stored in his trailer?

While I do like some of the "make up a new mode from the toy" attempts like the twin-headed dragon mode of Black Zarak, the "stand Prime's trailer on it's end as a repair bay" is just nonsense.

The Studio '86 box pictures the repair bay mode on the front.

Yes, it's one of the examples that led me to post a comment on it. Don't know why - laying it down in the proper configuration makes it look much more impressive. Of course, it shouldn't do either as it didn't happen I the movie.
And the axe he used for under a minute in that one episode can sod off too...

But it was an in episode of G1, and so therefore is a thing from the original Transformers for which Transformers Toys Consumers are nostalgic. They have decided that the axe is an important part of your childhood and that you should therefore repurchase it repeatedly... ;-) Karl

Which I never saw as a child but the bit in the comic (DECEPTICON DAMBUSTERS) made a big impression on me back in the day. So I tend to think of Prime having an axe, even though my childhood memory of it was just a few panels in one scene in one story! -Ralph

It's a very good minute. Adding an axe is extra play value so always gets my vote. It can be chucked in a corner if unwanted by a fan. -Ralph

To be fair, I do like the bit where he tries to stab Megatron with his axe.

The axe looms large in my imagination as well due solely to the comic, especially the cover of the Collected Comics edition of Decepticon Dambusters!.
Of course ,nothing like as much as that classic moment where we first saw the iconic Wreckers Hammer! Unforgettable stuff.
