I never completed a Special Team. Not as a kid, not now. Blades stood in for Air Raid on Superion for nigh on 30 years - never could find him after getting the rest of the aerialbots across Christmas and my birthday one year.

Cullen The Prophet preempts Combiner Wars!
We had Brawl and Onslaught in 1986. I picked the other three Combaticons up in Classics.
Devastator and Superion were both buy in one go jobs

Yup. Toys were available for years. None of the 'sells out in seconds/minutes' nonsense we often have now. -Ralph At least Hasbro are now making some positive moves around longer term availability with the A-Level figures, but it's an extremely limited range. I had all the Stunticons one birthday. I wouldn't have another full combiner until Classics allowed me to complete the Protectobots and Combaticons. The Aerialbots had G2 Silverbolt as the core until I got a second hand original. I think I have everything for Devastator but as it's all been picked up piecemeal and second hand over the years, they've never been combined. I have all the Transformers from the Technobots and Seacons but still not all the accessories to put them together. I have the reissued Predacons.

That's ok. All the limbs were designed to fit onto any leader so you didn't have to get a specific team to make a Hasbro approved gestalt robot. Didn't have a torso bot until Hun-Grr came out, and I couldn't add my Autobots to him.

Of the UK 6 Autobot cars I don't recall seeing Bluestreak and Hound so often. And I don't recall seeing the US 5 too often at all but that may well be influenced by them all being gone by 86. Funnily enough, I only don't remember seeing Sideswipe about.

They were separate and distinct teams, not mix and match! But attaching the Aerialbots and Protectobots to Metroplex was fine, because that was in the instructions.

I had some difficulty finding Ratchet in 1984 and Wheeljack in 1985. Then towards the end of ‘85, there were no TFs at all and the local paper ran stories about how kids were going to be disappointed at Christmas. In maybe February 1986, one shop was putting up sandwich boards to announce that Optimus Prime was finally in stock.
I had already gone out and bought him as soon as I read issue #1, so the timing is appropriate. So is the name (“best first” according to one letters page) because it was also the first TF toy I ever bought. I liked that I could store my Robo Machines in the trailer, but along with the comic he ended up converting me from them to Transformers.
The main cab/robot is one of the best thought-out designs of all the TFs. It's quite a simple transformation but it works really well and looked great in animation. The has a suitably alien feel, though the Diaclone figure is conspicuously absent from the missile platform. I think at least one catologue from 1984 (Argos? Littlewoods?) actually showed mini figures in the trailer, hinting at a slightly different draft of the TF mythos. On the same theme, I always wondered whether the separate Prime module meant that there was once a plan for him to be two (or three) different characters.

Lived in Norfolk then. Sometimes got very lucky, e.g., Prowl. Other times, nothing... not a goddamn thing. I ached for Soundwave, but couldn't find him anywhere. Got lucky with the likes of Megatron, Optimus Prime, several cars, Starscream, lots of Mini-Autobots. Very little '84 round me in '84. It seemed to pick up in '85. And no complete Special Team either, although I had enough bits to make some cross-faction monstrosities.

Toys’R’Us opened up near me in autumn 1986 and it was like I’d been transported to Cybertron. They had everything in the UK range stacked several deep, along with a gray Perceptor that was much cheaper than the official TFs. Then just a week before Christmas, they got in Rodimus Prime and Wreck-Gar, both packaged with the American leaflets. I’m not sure if this was an exclusive or just getting a headstart on the ‘87 range, but it was good that they waited until after the movie had been released rather than spoil it.

Yes, that was the same with me. I remember seeing Rodimus and Wreck Gar in a local toyshop called Zodiac Toys near Christmas, just after seeing the movie too.

Looked odd when I first saw it. But IIRC it's a Japanese thing from either the original Japanese Transformer box or possibly the Diaclone box

I believe that the rules in this place are that if it doesn't show it can do it in the instructions or on the box, then it shouldn't be done. Which is why it does indeed irk me, other territories be damned!
