The word is: Alight

This is a couple of years ago now (in my defence). I was on a train journey. When the train reached it's final stop, the 'voice' said "This is the last stop. Please alight here."

Alight? What the freakity-Mcfreak?

I'd honestly NEVER heard the word before. I told my family and friend's about this and they couldn't believe I hadn't heard it before. I was driven out of town by a mob with torches and farming equipment!!!

Many a time I have been stuck on a crossword where I couldn't think of the answer to such-and-such clue. I've looked at the solutions and have thought 'what in bleeding hell is a (insert answer to the solution here).'
