Yes, the recent wind up Zoids toys looked really good (I think there was a tortoise cannon..?), but I was put off by the fact that the pilots rode on top of the Zoids, instead of in little cockpits, like a true Zoid.
What have I become..?

Well that doesn't sound likely.

I'm not sure what to make of this. Zoids were one of my favourite childhood toys besides Transformers and Lego and I'm sure I must have imagined transforming Zoids. In fact, I actually did have two knock-off Jumpstarters that had removable Zoid-based heads and tails. But now that I see it actually done, it feels like it should be a case of never the twain shall meet. Maybe it's the choice of Zoid. Though I loved Chaotic Century, a Liger just doesn't hold a nostalgic appeal for me.

Yes, the recent wind up Zoids toys looked really good (I think there was a tortoise cannon..?) A few years back I grabbed Zoids Mega Battlers Ruin and Tanks (Tanks being the Turtle). They've been a cupboard unbuilt, but checking the box I see they need a battery rather than use a wind up motor

Battery powered Zoids are nothing new: The Giant Zrk was the first followed by Zoidzilla/Gojulus, Gorgan/Gordos, Mammoth & Krark/Salamander - all Zrk retools/parts reuses. Red Horn, Gore (Iron Zong), Scavenger, Zaber (Sabre Fang) & the Shield Liger followed by the Shield Liger, which didn't get a European release. There's a number of additional battery powered original Japanese release Zoids that didn't make it to the UK.

Zoids does have it's own thread at tmukhub.proboards.com/thread/508/zoidsNot vastly used as for the majority of the time this version of the forum has been operating there's been little out that anyone has wanted: just a high end non motorised line and a line with larger pilots that was promised a release here and never got it
