I disagree. I am looking forward to this. I enjoyed Gendy Tartovsky's take on the Clone Wars but I thought it wasn't exploited as well as it could be. With about 100 episodes of this Clone Wars series already planned there is much more scope for story telling here. It's not like the Clone Wars hasn't been expanded in print form already. There are a lot of Jedi whose stories weren't even touched on in the films even though they got death scenes in Revnge of the Sith such as Ki Adi Mundi and Plo Kloon. Plus, they have Christopher Lee back to play Dooku! youtube.com/watch?v=snfIlC_wVMk

I'm quite excited, but I haven't been looking into it with much detail to make it as fresh as possible for when I see it. I'm just a bit worried that the story might be a bit bleh, what with it taking place between episode's 2 and 3 where there have already been loads of stories and you know what happens to all the characters. I'm not sure we need any more stories about Anakin being good but doing something a bit dodgy or the Jedi trying to work out who Darth Sidious is.
If you think it looks crap purely in the sense that you think the animation looks crap though, well, you might not be able to get past that.

Can anyone tell me if the animated movie release of The Clone Wars is hacked together episodes from the series, or is it original content necessary to view before season one?

It's an original feature. It's made up of a few episodes, but it is only available as a movie - the episodic version has never been released.
It introduces Ahsoka, so yeah, you should watch it before season 1.

It also has Christopher Lee voicing Dooku. Someone else did it in the series.

Ta. I've got the discs all here, just never watched them. But as Rebels is done now until the end of Jan I need to keep the Star Wars vibe going.

In an unexpected turn of events Mrs Pinwig had decided she's in on doing the full clone wars run. But she wants to start from the beginning to do it 'properly'.
Yes, pity me please, for tonight I'm going to have to watch... The Phantom Menace.
Wine will be required.

You know what? It may not be as good as the other films, but it's still Star Wars. It's still a couple of hours in that Universe, and there's so little of it we should cherish all of it.
Not the wine speaking. Probably.

It has aged surprisingly well. It's watchable even if it's a bit rubbish and I do think it's a better film than The Force Awakens.

I wouldn't go that far. Maybe in terms of a comprehensive narrative, because VII uses a lot of assumed knowledge that no one actually has yet, but VII is a more exciting film to watch.
I think if Phantom Menace was re-edited slightly to cut down on the slapstick with Jar-Jar (and I'm sure it has been by fans) then it would be slicker. I know it's criticised for all the political wrangling, but it does need that. It's a setup film; it establishes the situation Palpatine capitalises on. The wheels are turning all the way throughout. It does beat most sci-fi action films of the last 25 years hands down.

I've warmed to TFA but I honestly think TPM is a far superior film but to say why gets into spoiler areas I don't want to discuss until after Chrimbo. I can just never understand how to work the spoiler tabs.

There's a funny bit in The Phantom Menace that I'd never noticed until the Blu-Ray came out. After escaping Naboo the Queen tells Padmé to go and clean-up R2-D2. Except she's not the queen, Padmé is - the "Queen" is just a decoy. Padmé goes along and cleans him up anyway presumably to keep up the deception which I find hilarious. I imagine a story between films where the decoy gets fired (possibly out of a cannon) because she keeps making Padmé do menial tasks for shits and giggles. In an unexpected turn of events Mrs Pinwig had decided she's in on doing the full clone wars run. But she wants to start from the beginning to do it 'properly'. If you are doing it properly, here's the official chronological episode order. It's a way off for you yet, but when you've watched the six seasons, the story reel episodes are available to watch via the links on that page. Having warmed to The Clone Wars during its later seasons I keep thinking of picking the discs up myself. But then I keep thinking, as soon as I do that a fancy complete series will be announced.
