Just picked them up from TRU today. Loving the 3 for 2. And Frankly loving the Activators, but they are a bit of an odd bunch.
First up Bumblebee. He makes a perfect fit in the full size line up and in most respects looks better than the deluxe version. I dont like the false roof chest design on that version or how the feet look. The activator version doesnt suffer from those problem thankfully. It does however have horrible molded in to the side of the door hands which gives away its legends class ancestry. If this had been a main line basic it would have had proper hands theres plenty of room in the design for them. Hands aide this stands up to the average basic very well and captures the essence of the design far bette than the deluxe. It also transforms in to a tiny car mode. I think its smaller than a Throttlebot. If the car mode was upscaled to the same size as Lockdown Bumblebee would be rivaling him for tallest bot.
Bulkhead. The weakest of the three but I cant quite decide why. It feels like a cross between a McD TF and a Kinderegg surprise. Despite that the robot mode looks pretty good a little too kibbley on the back and too light weigh but good ball and socket joints on the shoulders elbows and hips. Unfortunately theres no joint on the knee at all. I suppose on a pair of legs that size it would be redundant but it just another thing that says look at me Im an oversized legend rather than a proper basic. I miss the basic class. The transformation is a bit disappointing like a lot of the auto transform BW basics it takes a lot of fiddling to position everything and even then its not smooth. The vans ok apart from gaping hole in the back and hinges that spoil the look of it, holes in the side and its weird proportions. So maybe not that ok. I still like it though. Bulkheads design is just hard to dislike.
Starscream. Oh my! What is it with this guy, first legends Cyb Starscream is pretty much better than the other two versions released and again now. In robot mode this a perfect little SS right down to the grasping hands, but actually mkes some improvements on the design. The arms have a better range of movement or at least more sensible, the shoulders a simple ball and socket as is the elbow but the joint allows the arm to raise as if holding a gun instead of palm up. Theres isnt the extra joint on the upper legs so they're less fiddly and the lasers on the arms look more like... well lasers. Transformation is basically BW Terrorsaurs but with a few extra twists. The only significant difference from the voyager version is that the arms remain under the wings rather than between the legs. It works quite well serving as engine and rocket assembley, except the visible hands sticking out behind the wing.
As I said an odd bunch. Starscream is a true basic toy it feels smaller but stands taller than all the basics I have near by to compare. Bulkhead on the other hand is an oversized legends figure with most of the simplifications of that line. Bumblebee is a hybrid. 75% a very good basic 25% dodgey legends type arms.
Overall well worth the money for Starscrem and BB. And considering they are a good few pounds cheaper than the last basic toys we got even Bulkhead is just about worth it too.
