Yes, it really has been that long. Yikes.
Some things that are a bit crap gain a tatty charm as they age. For instance, The Official Transformers Generation 2 Annual is by no means a great work of fiction but it's so hideously awful it passes through the tat event horizon and comes out the other end as a special kind of terrible genius. It may even be the greatest printed item of TF tat ever made and you all should own one. Yes, yes you should.
Now for Panini's short lived Armada comic, which was the UK's 3rd ongoing Transformers comic*. At the time I thought it was astoundingly shite, even allowing for it being pitched at a much younger age group than previous TF comics. I perservered for 3 issues before giving up. The only pleasure I got from it was the sticker album that came with issue 1. The issues were long ago recycled.
And so it was that a copy of issue 3 was in my AA goody bag. Hmmm. I wondered if perhaps time had been kind to it, helped by it now not being remembered as the last TF-UK comic after all. Was it as bad as I recalled?
Yes. Sweet zombie Primus, it was even more terrible than I had feared. Luckily, I was sitting atop the toilet throne at the time and thus my body and mind were able to communicate their feelings as one.
Oh well.

The Minicon holding cells were also a great peice of tat - well worth the entire run of the comic! That and Starscream telling some poor child very bluntly that his drawing of the Star Saber looked like a tennis racket!

Panini Armada - the lead strip only becoming readable with the last issue as the Wildman/Baskerville combo get reunited.
Dumbing down of material is a criminal offence in my eyes and even for a kid that would be simplistic, piss poor crap, much like the cartoon.

I was fortunate enough to miss the comic entirely but, as I'm a curious sort of person I will be on the lookout sometime in the future for the issues. I enjoy reading shite and it has that certain kind of charm that readable comics do not.

It improves in later issues, though not by much. The Armada strip in the final issue (#9?) is almost passable and the next issue panel could be described as intriguing (something about Armada Sideways in a pyramid, IIRC). I can also confirm that the Minicon prison is well worth the entire run. I didn't realise it until a minute ago, but it has sat below my monitor for the last five years.

The only thing I remotely enjoyed about the Armada comic was Furman's treatment of Dualor.
That said - the entire thing, like the cartoon, and the whole Unicron trilogy, is the worst material to appear under the "Transformers" banner EVER.
Oh -
and the toys from Armada were retrograde. Aweful. A step backwards in the worst sense of the word.
I have no Unicron Trilogoy toys, no Unicron Trilogy comics and am quite happy for it.

As I am clearly insane, I decided to read through Nick's copies of all 9 less than thrilling issues. #1 was better than I remembered but still shitter than diahorrea. #2 had Prime doing a sex face while groaning about how good he felt as some mini-con bit him in the bum or something. This was more than I could take (and I also had no booze or hob-nobs) so I skipped straight to #9 and was shocked by some immensely improved art and stories that did not make me want to put my head in a bucket of my own urine. However, there was an unintentionally very funny bit where Megatron shouted: "NO! NO! Not my base!" while shaking his fist in fury in exactly the same way that very drunk people shake their fist after they've blankly watched their freshly purchased kebab slide out from the container and splatter on to the rain-swept pavement below. I found a scan online: www.tfarchive.com/community/attachment.php?attachmentid=4207&d=1220996227So there. Arblefarblewoo. -Ralph

I've never seen pages of #10 (or was stated it was #10) But Lee had pages from #12 at AA2004. But at least everyone who worked on #10-12 got paid.

I remember Simon Williams had pages from the comic in #10 on Facebook (but not anymore) Didn't realise they'd got as far as 12! You sure that wasn't the second strip in #10? I have the Jetfire and Commemtor art from issue 9 as well. Looks a lot nicer without all the computer colouring!

Thats two more issues of artwork for you to battle Geldof for.
I like that the minicon transforms then has to get down on all fours to get the rocket in to the same position as it was in in vehicle mode. Silly minicon.

Lee said #12 was him & Simon on art - no Wildman for that issue. That Lee wasn't in #11. I've gone to try & search but Lee only has the Armada game comic up.
