Thought it might be a good idea to have a technical questions thread where anyone interested in or working on a fanzine can ask technical questions they may be having problems with and the rest of us could contribute our collective wisdom.
I'll start the ball rolling:
I've recently acquired Adobe Illustrator CS3 and am using it to do lettering. I'm currently using the comiccraft guides to figure out how to make the balloons, etc but can anyone recommend: a) A font b) font size

www.blambot.com for free comic book fonts is your best destination. As for font size itself - for standard dialogue I tend to go between 9pt and 11pt depending on the story and amount of text. Obviously changing sizes for whispers and shouting accordingly. Andy

Thanks Andy, I'm currently using Webletterer 2.0 from there.
When working on a 'comic' size fanzine is it ok to do all the layouts, etc at A4 size and send that to the printers with instructions or should it all be done straight to 'comic' size?

Your best bet is to start off working at the size you want the magazine printed in. I use Adobe InDesign for assembling my fanzines and it will let you specify comic size and when you export to pdf it will allow you to make sure the pdf is the same size.
If you do it at one size and ask the printer to change it you'll get charged more and also chances are that's when screw-ups with formatting and pagination will occur.
